www.ancestry.com and others like it, are they worth the money???

i would rather search my cars history since dmv is of no use anymore with the new laws but don't want to sign on for a whole year and be done searching in 3 months or less if they don't work

I've thought about it,  :scratchchin: but I don't need a year membership either. Would be fun to do with my kids.

I would say no but then again I have  never used it. I still prefer the old fashion way of digging through family books and connecting the blanks. Every family has at least one ancestry nut, in ours it's our dad. My biggest concern with those pay sites is, how do you know the info they give you is legit?

Uh, because it is from the original source?  In other words, when I searched my family on Ancestry, they had the actual newspapers, the actual immigration books, the actual ship manifests, etc.  I just stopped Ancestry cause I am cheap, not because it was not worth it. Kim

I really like familysearch.org, it has alot of information, plus its free, researching your family line is important, I have been able to trace my family back to the mid 1800's and discovered that they shortened our last name in the early 1900's, it is alot of work but definitely worth it. :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

it lists anitas' death but shows the wrong SSN, i have the real one on her death certificate
it lists Janet as dead  but other lists say she is alive, but gives no other info, i try to down load the file they have (not sure exactly what it would tell me) but my computer says it can't open the file :brickwall: :brickwall:

Just go to your local public archives.  You can research your ancestory for free.  They even have ancestory.com for free there.

Honestly I didn't feel I got anything out of Ancestry.com when I tried it.. It was fun for a week or so then it was one dead end after another... Like others have said, try searching public records first..  Just my  :Twocents:

THANKS TO ALL WHO WERE ABLE TO HELP -  TO THE REST OF YOU DON"T GIVE UP AND DON"T COMPLETELY TRUST WHAT YOU FIND ON THE INTERNET - TALK TO A PERSON

i don't want to jinx myself but things are looking up for a change

some news, Sunday afternoon i went around to all 6 addresses i had, some from me, some from others, and was able to eliminate 2 of them then i went back to the other 4 again,  still nobody home but the last one i got to talk to a neighbor and his description got my hopes up........ so i wrote a quick 1 page letter and left 6 photos on her front door

at 930 sunday night i got a call from the grand daughter (she's 52 now) of the original owners who still lives in the Denver metro area in the same house she grew up in!!!!!!!!!!!
the lady i left the photos with was the 2nd wife (not the grand daughters mother) of the guy who died in 2006 out here and the lady in Denver is his daughter. he was the only son of the original owners, he had 3 kids, 2 boys and the lady that called me.  The grand father owned Tanner - Silvey Sales co., a Denver , they were manufacturers representatives for automotive supplies (i didn't understand the title but thats what was in the obituary that i got from the Denver historical Library archives FOR FREE, and they did all the searching for me!!

her grandfather (the internet said this person was a female), he bought the car for her grandmother as an early 59th bday present then died the next month, thats why the grandmother kept the car all those years in snowy denver AND drove it.  when she died , the son was a car collector and sold the charger to the guy i bought it from due to having too many cars to take care of.
the granddaughter learned to drive in my charger and is very excited about seeing it again, she says she'll look through her pics in the basement and send me some if they have the car in them.

two  things are very weird with this whole deal though, just creepy actually,
1. the grandfather, grandmother and father of this woman all died in the month of February
2. this ladys' father moved out here to las vegas and if i had kept looking for him years ago i could of got current pics with him and the car instead of hoping for new ones. :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall:

i've been so excited all week the guys at work think i won the lottery or something, i hope she comes through with the pics, that would be tooo coool

That is AWESOME, and quite the goldmine of information! I'd be running around all excited, too! I'm looking forward to the rest of the story (with pictures, hopefully!)

Weird about #1 up there

My family has been researching our ancestry for 50 years. here is the culmination of the works. Edward Maria Wingfield is my direct ancestor and was the first "president" of the United States in 1607 at Jamestown. Here is a link to check out. I have also had my DNA analyzed which was paid for by our family society to check for DNA deviations over the generations. I was a direct match back to 500 AD on our Celtic side.

http://www.wingfield.org/

Definitely worth the research in my opinion.

Cheers,

well, the bad news is i can't get her to respond anymore, sent her a bunch of pics, said she would send pics, i waited a couple of months, sent her an update on car, no response, left message on phone at home, no response, sent an xmas letter, no response, even though she sounded really excited about finding the car again, nothing has come out of the relationship.  she has 2 brothers in Cali but i didn't think to get their info, so now i'm at a dead end AGAIN.  i really kick myself for stopping looking for all those years and her Dad was right here in Las Vegas before he dies in '06.......... :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall:
