Anyone have much experience with those places that just repair the stone chips in glass without replacing the whole windshield?  Is it really any better or just delaying the inevitable?  Is it invisible?

Bob

Ghoste,
I had it it done a couple times and I could never find the spot again they repaired.
I had great luck with the do-it-yourself kits.

How would you compare your results to the "pros"?

Once I razor-ed off the excess you could just barely see the spot but never had an issue again. This was up stated New York where the cold really takes it's toll on bullseyes.

Cool, thanks.  So now let me ask you this, what was the kit(s) you used, how much were they, how much was the pro repair, how far does a kit go?

I got mine at WalMart for about (I think $6). The pro repair was $40. It's a epoxy mix in a injection tube. You clean the area, attach a suction cup, pull out the air and inject the epoxy. Let sit (I think 2 hours) then use the razor and slide it over the glass to cut the resin. Be sure to do it in the recommended temperature or all is for nothing.

No joy for me Bull, Safelight did mine and it is visible. They warned me it might be but as it's one of their windshields it continues the warranty.

Ghoste

How visible?  Was there a particular reason they felt yours might be seen or is that a standard warning they give and yours turned out to be true?

Well its a dot about this big >  :o  The danger is the dot can turn to a crack in the wink of an eye if not treated. I think that if you get a repair you can see, you will see the whole damage just not as extreme because it's filled with clear.  :scratchchin: They charged me 60 bucks and it took 1 hour.

Ghoste

So overall you're satisfied then?

When I worked at a dealership, we had a local glass shop that we took cars to that repaired chips, etc.  Its weird to explain, the repairs were done good, but if the light hit them a certain way, you could tell where the repair was, but it wasn't that bad, almost like a tiny blurr or something, infact someone who didn't know the repair was done, probably would never notice it. They used to charge around 40-45 bucks.

seen the glass guys do it at work  , when that chip repair first come out  !! they use to drill into the chip or near it to pump the resin in & use a ultra violet light to cure the glue ! , have not seen it done like  that  for a while  , or just different type of chips  :scratchchin: ,  all i have seen lately is just a vacuum seal & pumping it in ,  a lot of the time it is difficult to see ! , but that  mostly is down to the type of chip ,
have a small bulls eye in the chargers original windshield , right behind the wiper blade :scratchchin: , still wondering how it got there :-\,   bought one of the kits going to fix it my self  :yesnod:

Best part is i NEVER noticed it until i got into the passenger seat, the mirror sits right in front of my vision of it so it dosnt bother me.
