I was driving the Charger today and all of a sudden the car backfired and the ammeter pegged on discharge, basically all of my alternator wiring is now burnt up in one place or another. What I really need to know is what does the blue and green wire do and where do they connect, my blue wire is burnt up until the voltage regulator.

Yup thanks with that and the full car diagram I think I can put it all back together. Do you have any ideas why the blue and green wires would short out. Could it be a bad voltage regulator?

The blue wire is keyed battery voltage, a fault in one of the circuits it powers would cause the wire to short out. The green wire is a variable ground from the regulator so even it it shorts to ground the wire shouldn't be harmed.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thats not good I think the blue one originally shorted and caught on fire, making the other wires catch on fire with it. I just resoldered and fixed the burnt wires and will quickly start it up tomorrow and see how the ammeter reads.

Yah, I know but I am hoping that the insulation on a wire wore away and grounded out instead of the alternator going bad.

if blue wore away and meet with chassis or with green wire, violet wire, distributor wires ( all drives somehow ground ), will get a short

if green wore away and chassis shorted, will get full charge, like bypassed regulator

I took the alternator to autozone to get it tested and it failed so I have a new one in their now so hopefully the problem should be fixed.

I took the car for a test drive today and it works great. I can now have my headlights on at idle and not be discharging.
