clips around the windshield/rear window?

I am in the process of a rebuilt of my '68, it was originally red with a black vinyl top. I will not be putting the vinyl top back on, so can I remove all those little clips around the windshield and rear window? I am just not sure if they are there to hold in the window or for the top so I do not want to remove them if I need em. This pic sort of shows em around the frame

They hold the trim on around the windows.
