What is it worth?

Can you guys give me a budget number for what the following motor is worth?

Rebuilt 1978 440, .030 bore, hot tanked and magnfluxed, new freeze plugs, bearings, new stock 375 HP cam, new rings and pistons, crank turned .010, new timing chain gear and chain, motor is still in plastic rebuilt for two years, stock heads no head work but hot tanked. The motor does not have the following, intake manifold, oil pan, distributor, carb, valve covers, timing chain cover.

If someone can just give me a range I would appreciate it. I have a line on this motor and just need a little guidance.

Thanks,

TylerCharger69

I just bought a 1978 440 complete from carb to pan along with a 727 tranny.....HP block at that which was removed from a sheriff patrol car.  (Dodge Monaco)  I paid 200 bucks for the whole set-up...and the engine was extremely clean..and already punched .040 over with a ten-ten cut crank.  I don't know if you want to use that amount for a reference considering I feel
i got this pretty cheap!!

I think you stole that! Does it run?

He said it ran when he pulled it from the car....you could actually still see cross-hatch pattern on the cylinder walls.  The oil looked like honey, and the coolant was still as green as new!   I went ahead and disassembled it because I was planning on doing so anyway.  It was rebuilt recently before the engine was pulled.  It proved to have keith black flat top pistons with chrome rings,  not sure about the cam profile,  windage tray, 906 heads....and a few other things.  I'm reassembling it as we speak, and I'm having the valves redone....just in case.  The transmission so I'm told ran and shifted perfectly, and judging by the fluid that was still in it....I believe it.  Looks like it was rebuilt not long ago as well.....so yeah....I think I more or less stole it    :2thumbs:

I went ahead and bought the motor I was looking at. The motor and heads are from a 1975 car. The date of the heads match up with the casting of the block and and the date stamped in the pad. I guess it is nothing special since it has a cast crankshaft, but the motor has been completely rebuilt.
The seller had the motor in a 66 Charger, had the motor rebuilt and decided to abandon the project. He called a local salvage yard to come and get the car. It was rough from what I saw of the pictures. The car had all the parts in it that I am missing from the motor! He told the salvage yard driver to just take the car and all the parts. He showed me a receipt from the yard where they paid him $200 for the car and the missing parts off my motor! Typical case where a guy starts a project has no idea what he is doing and then runs into financial problems.

Dude, that sucks!  Can you go to the wrecking yard and pick them up?

WHAT A F%&$#*&@ WASTE.  In all my years of tinkering thats just dispicable... atleast put the damn thing on craigslist dont just junk it.  I KNOW someone would pay more than 200 measily bucks for a 66.  Atleast then whatever could be used such as any sheetmetal would go to another car.  I hate stupid people  :brickwall: Quick someone go hide my gun before I find out where this guy lives.

Calling the junkyard first thing this morning to investigate the situation. I will keep you posted.

I about sh** when he told me what he had done.
