I now have the 727 tranny but I really need another gear. What do I do? Is there a cheap way???

Rolling_Thunder

ummmm   honestly ?   not really unless you get a deal on a 518 with an ultrabell, and the associated parts needed for the swap.

I can get a 518 cheap but it needs to be rebuilt, and then get the adapter ++. It would cost around 2600 dollars and that's almost as much as a new transmission. No other way? What would I get for the same price if I would buy a new one???

if you already have a 727 you might be interested in a Gear Vendor's unit...

so would the 518 with an ultrabell be a bad choice? How much would that cost? Would it cost more than gear vendor? Or could I get a new automatic transmission with a 4th gear (overdrive)?

I have a 518 in my 73/446 Charger. Works good for a cruiser. Stock junkyard trans /converter. Ultrabell .Shiftkit. Big cooler and 3/8 lines . $1000

3.55 axle ,could switch to a 4.10 now.

3000 miles on it so far. Overdrive is great.

This winter I want to put better clutches , bands and a few upgrades in and a better lock up converter. $1000

I only go to the track once a year  I will be doing lots of burnouts the weekend at the Nats.

Tarzan

Where do I get this ultabell? And is it hard to find a 518 or could I do something to my 727 since the 518 is a 727 transmission.

Ultrabell avialable at summit or jegs. $325

My 518 came out of a 94 3500 series van /5.9L  $400

Saw two at the Mopar nationals $300 range.

Tarzan

Hello again.

I have read that I only need the ultrabell adapter to my 727 transmission and then I will have the overdrive gear, and that this Ultrabell is available at summit or jegs. $325 or am I wrong?

Is this correct or do I have to buy the 518? It is the same transmission, why can`t I use the one I have?

The transmission was rebuilt 2 years ago and it has not been driven alot, so it is in great shape. Just think that it would be a waste to buy a new one if I could use the one I have.

Please help me out here.

The Gear Vendors unit is like adding another gear to your 727.  You cannot add the overdrive unit from a 518 to a 727.  The 518 was made after big blocks were discontinued, so if you want one behind a big block, the Ultrabell is used.  You actually cut your 518 bellhousing off and bolt the Ultrabell to the front pump.
