Anyone know how to change a distributor magnetic coil??  Can't figure out how to get the large round piece offthe inside of distributor (the rotor sits on top of it), hate to try and just pry it off.  Thanks!!!

John_Kunkel

The round piece is called the reluctor and it doesn't need to be removed to remove the magnetic pickup, just remove the single screw over the adjustment slot and pull the pickup straight up from its pivot pin. When reinstalling, set the air gap at .008" using a brass feeler gauge; measure the air gap at several points to check for a bent shaft. (see below)

If you ever do need to remove a reluctor, use two common screwdrivers and pry up equally on opposite sides; prying on one only side quarantees a bent shaft. After the reluctor is removed you will see a small roll pin that fits a groove in the shaft and acts as a key to position the reluctor.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

make sure you line the reluctor up correctly there are 2 slots for the roll pin & there is an arrow for dist rotation on 1 slot , or mark it before you remove it

Thanks Guys!!!!!!!!!

Wish I'd waited a couple of days, but got in a hurry and tore the distributor apart and discovered what you guys said!!!  Had to take it off anyway.  Got it back together and it works. Got lucky on lining it up I guess.

THANKS AGAIN
