Once again...I find myself asking another question.....As most of you know I've acquired a 440 HP engine  and transmission which used to belong in a sheriff's department squad car. (police interceptor)  Question is....I would like to use the transmission also, therefore, will that transmission bolt up to my '69 Charger without having to change things, other than the tranny mount itself?  Oh!!  by the way....the car was a 1978 Dodge Monaco.  I see some differences in the shapes of the tail shaft and main body, but after measuring....it seems that the two bolts that hold the tranny mount to the tranny itself are in the same location as the original '69 housing.  Thanks guys!!.....Ace

should slide right in, i think you need motor mounts but i cant recall if small block and big block mounts swap out. also the drive shafts will be different, or at least the yoke shoudl be larger on the big block 727.

TylerCharger69

No....it's a 383 car.   so....no small block here!!!!

c00nhunterjoe

hmm, dont know where the hell i got that idea from, you would think i would have looked at the nice big picture of the engine in your signature.  :flush: in that case it should be a direct swap with everything you currently have with the exception of the distributer.

why would you want the tranny out of a 78? your 69 trans should be beefier

TylerCharger69

Well...it DID come out of a cop car  so i assume it's stronger.  I noticed that the flex plate and the torque converter on the 440 assembly is a bit smaller than the 383....Any reason as to why this is????

c00nhunterjoe

converter size has to do with stall speeds and how it locks up. not sure on why the plates are different

TylerCharger69

Yeah...the flexplate on the original 383 (originally a 2bbl car) is larger in diameter than the one that I just bought with the 440.  The torque converter on the 440 setup is smaller in diameter and has a wider teeth ring for the starter as opposed to the 383 setup.    Answers????
