Yes, I know.  I'm full of questions, but like I always say....there are no stupid questions...just stupid mistakes. First of all, I'm changing the 383 to a 440 HP. The electronic distributor in the 383 is new.  My question is, in order to save cash, can I change out the shafts? Meaning can I pull the main shaft from the older 440 electronic distributor and put it in the newer housing from the 383, or are there other differences that would make that impossible?

:popcrn:good question, i would assume so but i am not sure, stock replacement distributers are only 50 bucks with a lifetime warrenty assuming you have the electronic distributer- http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Distributor-Cardone_5630622-P_218_R|GRPTUNEAMS_516428506___

Only difference is shaft length, easy to change. One thing to be careful of is that the hole in the nylon retainer and shaft is usually drilled a little off center.Make sure it is lined up with the hole in the shaft when you put it back on or you will split the nylon retainer. If the holes don't line up,turn the retainer 180*

Cool...thanks all.......depending on the time frame and the cash......I WANT to put an MSD ignition system in. But if the paint gets done quicker than I hope, I'll use the current one until then.  Only so much cash in certain time frames

Hey stay away from the A-1 cardone stuff it's crap I had 2 bad ones before I gave up and bought new MoPar!! (also they want a core back=20 more bucks) Get a junkyard one! I'd give you the one leftover but it's got a bad wobble in it! (and it's a "new re build!)

y acant beat msd ignition. i also cant explain the junk reman's must be a bad run for some reason? like i said, mine has been in for many years run through an old school msd box with no issuee

Well #2 rebuild was better than #1 but it's clear that they just clean em up and slap them together. I think they do the same with master cylinders, some just happen to come through better than others...it's random for you or I as end users. You may get a good one that will last for years but I had a several kinda defective/wrong things find there way into the rebuild of my 440 and it drove me nuts finding and sorting them out. Now I'm "gun-shy" of anything rebuilt.
