I am going to be replacing my ball joints soon and I don't know what tools I would need. Both of my ball joints are threaded, do both of them take the same size socket? Do I need anything really besides the fancy socket? This is for a 73 Charger.

HAHA!!

Was about do it it with mine and figured a socket would work...NOPE! I knew it need a special tool but decide to give it a go, fought with it for about 20 min using things i had on hand and she did nada.

So gave up for now they do need to be replaced but are not worn to the point of being dangerous (ball still sits firm in the socket)

I know my cousin has the tool at his shop somewhere...let me look for it and ill let ya borrow it.

I guess you are talking about uppers? You need a special socket and a 37.5 foot breaking bar  ;D  Usually upper ball joints are in decent shape. The lowers wear out much faster in comparison.

bordin34

Uppers and Lowers, they are both threaded on 73. So FLG the fancy socket didn't work for you?

The socket didnt work..i couldnt find the correct one. I asked cousin and it should be on the wall with all the rest of the "old" tools LMAO!!

Will look for it tomo!

Thanks, only one problem with me borrowing the fancy tool, you live in the city. At 17 I am not allowed to drive in the city, we would have to meet up somewhere.

I'll take the ride up to you. I found em hangin on the shop wall just need to make sure i have the correct size.

terrible one

I have the socket just sitting gathering dust if something falls through and you need to borrow it for the cost of shipping

bordin34

Thanks terrible one, but the one for 73 is just slightly larger than the 68 one, so it probably wouldn't work.

73 lower ball joints are VERY DIFF pieces than  72 monster pieces :D. On 73 and laters uppers and lowers are allmost the same. They fit on control arm and tappered stud inserts directly on spindle, diff than earliers where they bolt on spindle and tappered stud fits to LCA.

BTW 73 LCA ball joints are threated like upper one, but 74 and laters LCA ball joint are pressed now.

Thanks Frank, no rush, I probably won't have the time to replace them until a couple days before or after Carlisle.
