What would be a safe clearance between the exhaust pipe and the starter cable? I have about .5", is that enough?

Do you have anything on the cable to protect it from the heat?  That would definitely aleviate the problem.  I would like to see  2 to 3 inches of clearance.  Any less than 2 inches will make for brittle, melted or burned cable.... yikes.

Can the tab that connects to the starter be bent so that the cable will have more clearance?
