Converting from 22" radiator to 26"

My 68 originally had a 22" radiator but had a 26" bolted in when I got it.  I would like to do the install in a more correct fashion and was told that the only difference in the two was the passenger side core support was different and that the driver side piece was the same in both.  I picked up a 26" pass support but when holding it up to the 22" in the car it looks like the holes are still around 1/2 to 3/4" off from where the 26" radiator was mounted.  Can anyone verify if both sides were different in 26" factory cars??  Thanks

Matt

there is small difference in both sides, bit it can be done just changing out one side.

jerry

to be more correct you need to change them both.otherwise might as well keep what you got.

I've made this change before by just replacing the one side & the original driver side was off a hair. LEON.

the 22" and 26'' left side look totally different not counting the holes being wrong.none of this matters to some but when the hood is open its in your face.myself ,if its worth doing its worth doing right.

I agree, I had a bunch of people tell me that the pass side was the only difference.  Now I will have to try and find a driver side piece as well  :brickwall:

The repop rt side takes into account for the diff. in the lt side and works fine....It still wont look 100% orig, but will foor most people.

I'll have to check that when I get home, I have one of a donor car and a repop also.  They looked the same but I didn't take any measurements or anything.

I did mine fairly easily. Depends what you are going for.
I bolted in the 26" rad, and marked the right side baffle with tape. I cut straight down carefully, leaving a 1/4" extra. Using a body hammer & dolly, I created the flange and ground/filed it straight.
It required drilling one hole up top for the radiator mounting, and using a simple 1/4" spacer up top between the radiator & the support.
NO ONE has ever questioned it. It cost nothing using the simple tools I already had. Does it look 100% stock? No, but the car runs a lot cooler and it looks like a neat, factory job.

The repop piece I had did have the mounting holes moved over slightly  :2thumbs:  I have it fitted and ready to weld in, I will take some pics and post soon.

Hey, Matt. If you want, I do have the 66-68 , 26 assembly at the shop if you want to look at it to verify, here is a pics.

David,

Thanks for the info, I think I finally have it though.  I didn't know they were reproducing that whole assembly either.
