Torsion confusion!

I got new torsion bars for my 73 Charger SE from a local Mopar parts dealer. They sold me 780R and 780L bars, and these are the same numbers that I got from Summit for this car. The local place cost $231.00, and Summit was over $300.00 , so I bought them locally. When I removed the right side Torsion bar from my Charger, the number on it is 658R, but the problem is that the 658 measures 43 1/2 inches long, and the new 780 only measures 41 inches! Did I get the wrong bars, or is this length difference OK? Is there a difference in the Charger Torsion bars as compared to the Charger SE ? I asked for 73 Charger SE Torsion bars at BOTH places, and the 780 is what I was told to get! Thanks for any help with this!

Now I'm really confused! The bar I took out of my 73 Charger SE is a good 2 1/2 inches longer than the new 41 inch bar! I measured both of them and the old one is 43 1/2 inches long and the new one is 41 inches long ... !!!  ... ???  I have not removed the left side yet. I quit when I saw the length difference today.

Starting in 73 B-Body bars are 43.6".

Original 780 and 781 are .92" x 41" long 1966-1971 B-Body. 440/Hemi

Your 658/659's are correct for your 73 and are .92 x 43.6". They were used in 318-340-400's.  The 440's in 73 used a a .96 or a .98 bar depending on application. I Think your 658/659 bars are ok unless you are doing some serious road racing for your car or if they are broken.

I think they are seriously tired! I got headers installed and I cannot keep from bottoming out with the car and banging them on the ground! The adjusters were turned up as far as they could be turned, and the shocks were new! I have the engine out of the car, and I am going to rebuild the whole front end...new ball joints, tie rods, pitman, idler, etc! I guess I will just have to find the longer bars! Thanks for the help!

I just called Summit and they told me that the catalog does not show any .92x43.6 bars at all...only the .92x41bars! They gave me Mopar Performance Tech's number to call tommorrow during their business hours. Does anyone know where to get the proper .92x43.6 torsion bars for this 1973 Charger SE ? Thanks again! Looks like I will have to pay shipping again to return the wrong bars and a 25% restocking fee! And still have to find the correct bars! ...I guess that is half the "fun" ! It was more "fun" when I was younger! But the Charger is worth the effort!

25% Restocking fee?  Seems that Summit made the mistake, I'd have a friendly talk with them and try to change their mind on that restocking fee. Its worth a try.

It was the local shop that is charging the stocking fee, not summit...I think Summit would make it right with no problem, and I hope the local shop does also. I used the local shop because it was cheaper than summit quite considerably. I just hope I can find the correct bars now!

Nacho-RT74

yes 73 and later B bodies use longer T bars. Rear crossmemer is mounted further back, on an isolated piece from unibody. Unibody provides on these the brackets to attach the crossmember with isolators

Mopar ( or MP ) doesn't have those available

get from firmfeel.com :2thumbs: I already did ( 1.06" )

Is that a 1.06 diameter bar? ...1.06x43.6 ... ? So, the hex head would be the same size, but the bar diameter is thicker....is that correct? Thanks!

maxwellwedge

It does say 73-79 on their site - Call 'em up and ask the length to put your mind at ease.

chargers_r_us

Thanks! I understand that the bar needs to be 43.6, I am just wondering at this point about the diameter! Looks like it needs to be 1.06x43.6 rather than .92x43.6 ! I just want to make sure I am getting that correct! I just want to know what to ask for! I am dealing with my local shop right now since they are who I got the bars from in the first place, and they said they will take the wrong ones back for full refund, so I am just trying to give them the correct info to see if they can get the right bars for me! If they cannot get them, I will get them from firm feel....just had to give the local shop the opportunity to make this right! I appreciate all the help I have gotten from you and the DC.Com guys! Thanks!

maxwellwedge

I think the 1" ones will be fine.

All hex heads are the same, if not they wouldn't sell for the applicattion, yes everything is correct. I'm already running them.

It could be, I just preffered to go higher and got pretty much happy.

anything you choose needs DEFINITELLY good shocks... a worn stock T bar allmost will work or bounce the same than a new and thicker bar but some loosen to keep stock ride height and bad shocks.

T bars will allow you to get more weight in front and better sway reacction ( accomplished with sway bar of course ), but won't mean you don't need GOOD shocks. I'm going KYB GR2s ( only "HiPo" available to our cars )
