I'm hoping to fire up the engine for break in, in a couple weeks.  Car won't be drivable, so i was wondering; does the yoke have to be on the back of the tailshaft to seal it?  Or will it not leak?  Dawned on me that it'd be smart to ask...

yes, the driveshaft yoke does seal the rear of the trans.  Otherwise, it would leak tranny fluid out.

Cool thanks,  will it leak much if I pull it off to get the U-joint put in?  Or should it be installed/put on only once?

The yoke for the driveshaft will slide in and out with movement of the suspension of the car so you can put it in and take it out as necessary.  If you are not going to be moving the car and just running the engine, I would put the yoke in and just fire it up.  Just remember not to shift the trans into any gear other than park.

Neutral is ok, right?  The torque converter fills better apparently if it's in neutral...

If you are going through all this trouble, wouldn't you just want to get the driveshaft mounted anyways and get that out of the way?  Im sure it would be a lot safer and probably a lot cleaner should the yoke somehow work its way out.

You want to perform the initial startup in Neutral to fill the converter but the yoke will spin due to the windmill effect of the released clutches, it'll spin fast enouigh to work its way out in short order.

Best to have the driveshaft installed at startup.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

It won't leak much if any if you do it quick enough. I would suggest just installing the whole thing to avoid the other above mentioned problems. I think I read in one of your posts you have an 8-1/4 and you changed to a 727? You are better off getting everything sorted out first.

It's got a 8 3/4, I suppose it wouldn't be too much more work..  Thanks again.

Got a tail shaft ?.

Before I replaced the rear band in the transmission, when you spun the torque converter; the rear shaft would turn while in gear, would click and lock when in park.

Just put the converter back on yesterday, the rear shaft doesn't turn when I spin the converter.  is there a problem?
