its rough out there bro. I never managed to get any sort of "free" money...ended up having to take out loans, even though I went to a relatively cheap (about $1900 / semester) state school. It's the reality of the situation nowadays, but even if you get some scholarships youre still gonna have to borrow some $.

I hear ya. I had to take out about $50K in student loans. It's ruff. I hear that if you have ADD that there are good scholarships. I will find out next week for sure. I work full time and go to school full time, it's ruff.   You can get through it though.

Lol, not sure you can fake it very well. I have suffered from ADHD my whole life and it is REALLY starting to effect me again recently. My GPA has dropped from a 3.5 to a 3.2 and I am not happy about that. I am actually going to the Doc tomorrow to see about getting meds.

Sometimes if you find the right job, they also offer tuition reimbursement. So just because you take out a loan, doesn't always mean that YOU will have to pay it back. But that's only if you're lucky.

About halfway through college I joined the Air Guard. The student loan repayback helped pay down what I had already accumulated and tuition assistance and the GI Bill helped with the rest. Military isn't for everyone but can really help paying for college.

There are scholarships available through some of the well known foundations, like the Gates Foundation and others.  Hard times have hit these foundations and competition is very tough.  I a one child in the university system right now and will have a second in another year.  Play on your strengths for looking for scholarships..  Did you know that Harvard is offering grants for students that come from low income families?  If you are lucky you could get all of your tuition paid for with grant money.  Grant money is great because you don't have to pay it back.

Have you picked a school yet?  If so fill out your fafsa (check out the web for this site) with your information.  The earlier this is done the better the chance of getting grant money.  Your school will also have scholarship information that is available through the school.  I went back to school after being out for 20 years and my wife went back as well.  Yeah it is expensive but it is well worth it.  You can explore your options while you are in school and find a better fit for what interests you and what job you want to end up in.

Do what you have to do, and try your best not to rack up any more debt than you have to.

Colleges are like everything else in modern life:  They've gotten too loaded with mandatory options that you didn't even want, and they end up costing you 3x what it would have been prudent for you to spend just to pay for all that excess crap.

Just like a new truck..  all you really need is a v-8, 4wd, crank up windows, and no fm radio, but somehow you are told you need a bazillion options on your truck so you agree and you buy it.  In college all you need is too get over your  "party" phase the first year and then realize that you need to get a good job so you can retire when you are 85. ...

Tell them you take offense at the racial slur "white."  Your ethnicity should instead be referred to as "European American."

Tell them you're socioeconomically & gender disadvantaged too.  Your gender and your family's income bracket has made you a victim of institutionalized "Scholarship Redistribution."

Be careful these days with this one or you might get a transfer to Afghan U.

Bite the bullet and try and work as much as you can without it effecting your school/grades etc. Take out loans as needed, ultimately, the money your spending/loans will come back to you in higher salary etc. so the story goes.

My suggestion is to check with your department to see if there are any scholarships avaliable from them directly.  I know it sounds funny, but I have seen them offered in the past at different colleges that I went to.  Usually they are performance based, so you have to have a high GPA with certain skills to get one.

If you are very good at a particular subject, you might want to advertise tutoring in that area (or apply for a tutoring job directly with the college).  I will warn you that you can make more as a privite tutor than what you will if you are employed with the college (but the college job is guarenteed money whether or not you have any students that need tutoring, more stable overall).  Of course that all depends upon what you are going into and how much free time you have to do it.  Tutors in science and technology courses were in high demand when I was in college, something that worked in my favor when needed.  A fellow graduate chemistry student was making an easy $20-25/hour tutoring general/organic chemistry part time(every little bit adds up over time)....

I have a relative that sells blood to make ends meet, but then he's in his 11th year of junior college.  That's probably all I need to say about that.

Very well said.  :iagree:

My daughter's first year of college was an eye opener. She approached me and said "I need $650 for books". WHAT?  :o Are they Gold plated???
