After reading this post ....

I figured I would share what I find to be effective in protecting my computer.

Firefox - http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Web browser

*Get this add-on for it*   http://www.mywot.com/
And this one (might be a bit to proactive for must.... but great anyway)  http://noscript.net/

Spybot -  http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html

Blocks KNOWN trouble files before they happen

PeerGuardian2 - http://phoenixlabs.org/

Blocks KNOWN intrusive IP addresses

Nod32 - http://www.eset.com/

IMHO easily the best anti-virus, light CPU usage and up to date

Questions or comments?

In my opinion, your suggestions are the best (although, as you said, "no script" is very intrusive).  I would add one other to the list -- keep windows up to date.  In fact, turn on the automatic update feature.  Don't open attachments in email, don't run any executables from the Net unless you absolutely know the source -- this is harder than it sounds, be suspicious of error messages or free scan sites, etc. Kim

Keeping windows up to date I took as a given.

But yes keep it up to date.

And updates are a big reason why I like Firefox over IE.

I think there are a couple things missed.  You need to remember to keep your computer running smoothly by cleaning and organizing.  I use Cleanup and diskkeeper to do weekly maintenance.  It will prolong your hard drive life.   :yesnod:

Spybot is great. But it only works best if you up date it every week, which I do. I also run a manual scan weekly.

For anti virus, I us AVG Internet Security. When you google, it has a setting that shows which links are safe to click on and which ones contain viruses. (Works great when surfing porn  :D ;) )

My only problem with Norton was that they and McAfee were getting to intrusive on my system.  Meaning, they just put to much stuff into your system files and would sometimes really slow down your machine.  Besides the fact that they are subscription based services that you have to pay for and update each year.

My Firefox is acting up so I loaded Chrome, bounce back & forth between the two.

My AVG started acting up too.  The updates kept wanting "restarts" and wouldn't stop.  I've heard a lot of good stuff about "avast", so I'm trying it out.  It's stopped me from visiting sites now several times.  I still run AVG on the laptop and the same sites aren't stopped.

So who knows...

It's funny, if I open IE all it takes is 5 minutes and the alarms start going off.  ;)

download and install ccleaner

what is ccleaner ?  :shruggy: will it interfer with NORTON 360 ?

http://www.ccleaner.com/

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans wipes out cookies/history/temp files. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner.

I screwed up my confuzer at home a few months ago...it automatically blocks almost any update, or download. It did do a Windows update a few weeks ago, but if I try a new Firefox update, firewall update, or try to download any new online software, it slams the door on me. :(
Can't open PDF files, either. :icon_smile_angry:

I've messed around with it for hours trying to figure out what happened, but I'm too stupid. Yep, I admit it...I know just enough to make myself dangerous when it comes to confuzers. :brickwall:

My wife keeps telling me to buy a new computer, but I always find something else to dump my paychecks into. Once it finally locks up for good, I guess I'll buy a new one. :icon_smile_tongue:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Foreman72

unless yours is old it'll probably be cheaper 2 have someone look @ it 4 u...its a huge hassle switching "confuzers"  man
