68 Charger approx cost?

So I've got my diesel now and I don't really need my 98 Dodge SS/T I'd really like to find a somewhat clean driver 68. I don't mind work and would have no issues with a base model with no engine or transmission. I'm just wondering what an approximate cost for such a car would be?

SuperCharger

nobody? just looking at what people figure for an approximate cost.

Troy

Hey, give people at least an hour... ;)

I'd say more than your Ram but I dunno, when you figure it out gimme a call.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

It's so hard to tell you because there is such a wide range of variables.  It depends on what you do & don't want, what you consider "good" and "bad," and what you intend to do with it.

------------------------------------------

Picture the classic idea of a suitable "project car" in your mind - the one that needs a total paint/body job & rebuilt motor & seatcovers, but the frame & floors are solid & the whole car is all there.  It's barely still street legal if you wanted to drive it daily.  The kind of car that people picture themselves finding for $1500-3000 in some redneck's backyard.

. . . well, this 1968 Charger is worth about $10-15K in today's market.

------------------------------------------

The ideal GORGEOUS restoration is worth about $25K if it's a lower engine model.  More for a 383 or a 440 motor, maybe $30K and up.

But engine swaps are very easy compared to major restoration work, and A LOT of these cars have been swapped over to 383/440 motors even though they were smallblock cars from the factory.  The swapping jobs are typically done just fine, but the bottom line is that you'll be surprised what percentage of nicely-restored Chargers today are still wearing 318 motors.  It's not anywhere near as many of the total production as what were originally low-optioned cars.  (If you're already spending $20K on the whole car's resto, then what's another $2k to give your engine shop a 440 drivetrain core to overhaul for it in place of the 318 drivetrain?  Not much of an extra investment in the big picture.)

I'd be happy finding something like this: I'm looking for most sheetmetal to be there with preferably a complete grille and taillight interior is really completely optional I just want a somewhat solid basically roller body.

aone415

huge range depending on the model and options... a 318 car that runs can cost as little as $6 - 10k and a 426 could be in the $50-75k range.  I'd probably check craigslist, Moparts or this forum for cars for sale

This Charger right here is a one of none, that means none before it, none to come.

That car has rust holes in the roof. What were they asking?

SuperCharger

it's a before pic of a restored charger I found.

Troy

Ah, ok. Well, I sold one worse than that which is why I was asking. That doesn't fit my definition of "solid" so trying to get an idea of what you're looking for.

preferrably I'd like to sell my 98 in the range or 11-12 thousand and spend something like 3-5 thousand on a car that way I have some money to put into it to get it running and driving

69charger2002 just posted one in the for sale section for $3800.   :yesnod:   Looks like a good deal.  I bet it goes fast.   :2thumbs:

I would pay as much as you can upfront. Unless you can do all the bodywork and mechanical work the costs can add up quickly. if you have ten grand to spend buy one for ten instead of getting one for 5k and then spending another 5k fixing it. Now is a good time to find deals on muscle cars.

I can deal with mechanical, but I'd prefer to find something in decent body shape which is why I couldn't care what else it has long as it rolls, has windows, body is decently straight and solid and I don't have to piss around trying to replace things like door handle hardware.

You're thinking smart.  But unfortunately, almost everyone else in the old car hobby is thinking smart like this too.

In saskatchewan. lol I'm not afraid of bodywork ether tho. If I don't know I'll teach myself, I have a few friends in bodywork.

Mike DC

It deserves to be said that the bodywork situation for Chargers did just get a lot easier.  The advent of the new AMD and CBD body panels for these cars has covered some long overdue gaps in the parts availability.  There are a lot of cases where the supply of decent affordable used stuff has realistically dried up.

Nothing makes up for just getting a more solid car, but at least now a decent resto is POSSIBLE using new parts if you're willing to throw the money at it.

SuperCharger

yeah it's actually really nice to have these options. Cars that would hav been parts cars are now being fixed because of the availability of parts and pieces.

:iagree:  but more like buy one for $5K and then spend $10K to get it into the same shape as the one you could have bought for $10K

For Example, this car for $11,500 looks like a great buy and appears to be worth two/three times the one you pictured. You never know until you check it out...but you can kinda get the drift on just how the two cars look totally different for only a few grand more in price.

Sorry to revive this thread but I got an offer right now for my 98 for 10K CDN. I'm going to try and see if I can up the amount to 12K anyone able to give me an idea what I can find around 6-10K? I will need money to go pick up the car wherever I find one. I'm not asking for something as shiny as my truck or as well running I do have my 92 diesel I'm not picky It's just gotta be a 68 thats my only real requirement(plus I love getting my hands dirty)
