I need help trying to get a 225 to run

I acquired a 65 Plymouth Valiant for almost nothing. I'm trying to get it running first before I do anything else to it and I won't do anything major until after I finish my Charger. It's all original 225, missing the air cleaner. It had a small peformance air cleaner on it. The shop I got the car from said it needed a carb rebuild to run. Well I messed with it a little and tried to start it today. I think the fuel line at the tank might be leaking or the tank may have gotten damaged when the tow guy brought over, because fuel was leaking under the back near the tank. I sprayed some starting fluid in it today a couple of times and it fired up and ran for about 5 seconds and quit. I couldn't really smell any fuel in the carb before I started it and I tried starting the day before. It's got a Holley 1bbl on it. Really small. The previous owner had taken out the manifold choke and rigged up a manual pull choke that didn't even pull. Why would someone remove the manifold choke? He left it in the glovebox and it looks good. Maybe he lost the clip to hold it on. I've got it soaking in some Evapo-Rust. Is the carb easy to rebuild on this? It doesn't look like much, but I've never fooled with a 225 much.  Haven't had much luck with the A-body forum yet.

Its been a quarter century since I worked on a slant six, but here we go;

The fact that it fires on starting fluid is a good sign.

The fuel leak could be a bad piece of gas hose near the tank. teplace as needed.

If the tank is damaged you might do a temparary patch with silicone.

Take an old gear oil bottle wash out with gas ,then fill with gas . This can be used to fill the carb. See if it starts. Have a fire extengisher handy.

'65 air cleaners do have heated air snorkles if I remember corrrectly, so the aftermarket should work fine.

318-360 intake heat crossover frequently pluged with carbon from worn valve seals. This would cause the choke to not open correctly. Slant sixs had the problem sometimes.

That might be why the choke was converted.

Engine has points/cond. distributor.

Engine has mechanical valve lifters. May need adjusting.

Very dependable engine.

Hope this is some help

Run a fuel line from the fuel pump at a can of gas. It could be the line to the tank is gummed up and need replacing.

those 1 bbl carbs can be rebuilt in 30 min.  there are too simple.  seriously, not trying to toot my horn, but I have rebuilt two of them.. really easy.

I'm wanting to rebuild the carb, reinstall the correct choke, and replace the air cleaner. Previous owner put on a lawnmower sized air filter with a chrome top. I hate chrome air cleaners on all Mopar engines,even though they can provide more air. I got an air cleaner lid from a 64 Dart with the Charger 225 decal on it, that was just totally round with no snorkel and had holes on one side, like vent holes. All photos of original 64 and 65 Darts/Valiants with 225's I've seen have had this same non-snorkel air cleaner. So there shouldn't be a heat stove like on my 73 Charger's right? It started up on I guess whatever was in the carb, but it lasted 5-15 seconds, and it ran smooth. Sounded good. The car was a daily driver for the previous owner, but when he had the radiator replaced it sat for over 2 years not being started. This one has a weird gas tank. It has a pipe going through the side of the rear quarter panel and has line going to the top of the pipe. It looks like a pain to replace this tank.
