Getting closer to paint the charger I wonder if the part of the taillightpanel beeing black should be clear-bright black or satin black? :shruggy:

Per,

Discuttions about that are starting to gen endless.....

The paint should be flat not shiny.... BUT it's the texture I'm not an expert in..... Some say the paint sould have a rough texture underneath the black paint. Seems the factory used "organosol" for it to create that texture. (Whatever organosol may be, someone please tell me cuz I dont know).
But on the otherhand the rumour also says that cars built in St. Louis did'nt come with with the organosol and just had a flat black painted taillight panel......

But if I were you I'd wait for some imput from some of the real guru's here to tell the story right.

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

The orgasonal black paint was lacquer paint with a suede flattener and regular flattener to acheive the proper texture and gloss level.

The texture can be duplicated by spraying the sealer very dry , then topcoating it with the proper gloss leval black paint.

I have all of the different versions of black in spraycans from Totally Auto inc, is that good enough? :scratchchin:

Talk to your body guy about it.... I don't know but i find flat colors very hard to get nice with spray cans especially on larger surfaces.

BTW Brian, nice rear............No :slap:......not your's, I mean the Charger.

Was planning to have 2 hoods, 1 painted the bodycolour and one flat black with a scoop. Could I use the same paint on the hood as
on the taillight panel? :scratchchin:

It would be the organisol paint on the tail panel, unless the car was built at the St. Louis plant in that case it would be the gloss black. For some reason they didn't use the organisol.

I can remember seeing original panels that seemed too smooth for organisol, but I can't recall seeing them actually looking glossy.  They were still pretty flat every time I've seen an original one.  And I'm from St. Louis.

I'd say yes on the hood since alot of Mopars came with organosol on the hoods like  T/A Challengers, AAR Cuda's, Roadrunners, ect, ect. LEON.

Ditzler ddl is PPG lacquer......  PPG used to be named Ditzler

Its going to be tough finding the organosol black over there . That's why I made the recommendation I made posts back.

Correct PPG 9355.  On the PPg automotive finishes chart for 68 Charger its DDL-9355. Rear panel black out.
I've had trouble getting my paint supplier to provide it.  Claiming they can't get the texture additive.
Year one still has it listed in their catolag as QP9355 but ouch!!!!! 113.00 for a quart.
And by the way....one quart will do about a dozen tail panels so maybe you overseas type guys could  get a quart over there to share. :scratchchin:  Its mixed  with 1 to 1.5 laquer thinner so you end up with 2.5 quartz sprayable.

Per...if you have no luck I could spare you a pint mixed that should get your ass end shot with no trouble.
Shooting organisol is a bit of trial and error though to get the texture right.  Gotta play with the pressure, application rate and distance  to get it right.  Practice, but don't waste, on a old hood or door till your happy with your texture.

BlueSS454

I used DuPont 99K basecoat to do mine.  I applied 2 coats for coverage, then turned the fan on the spray gun off so it shot a stream and held it back about 2 feet and dusted the last coat on to get the texture.
