third brake light - in back dash/window

Hey, my 1973 se brougham charger has a small brake light in the back window.  I'm wondering if this was an option (would surprise me if it was) or something someone added at a later point in the car's life.  I don't really like it, and will probably remove it.  But I'm curious of it's origin.  Anyone know?

The CHMSL wasnt mandated till the 1985-1986 model year....
