I can pick up a 440 out of a 79 35 ft charter boat does anybody know if this would work in my 73 power wagon

It would probably have the special exhaust manifolds that have a water jacket around them.  And I think the carburetors have something special for marine applications.  And I don't think they use transmissions like in cars so the bell housing might be different.  All that stuff is available aftermarket now.  So I don't see why it wouldn't work.  You would probably be rebuilding the engine anyway.  If it does have this special stuff on it, don't throw any of it away.  Could be valuable.  If you didn't want it, you might be able to sell those items.

be aware...    440 marine engines can be counter rotation...   meaning camshaft and intermediate shaft are different and will not work in a vehicle application.    Also - Crankshaft will need to be cut and modified as it has a different rear main seal that will forever leak when you use a standard rear seal.
