Police Interceptor Engines?

What exactly was the difference, internally and externally, for the Police Interceptor Engines? Were they bored and stroked from the factory or something? If there was something in the tranny different, or special gears, tell me too. Also, were there different code police engines? I have heard of "U" code interceptor engines, but no other.

For the most part "police interceptor" is a term used more by the other automakers.  Ford especially seemed to use it.  In the mid 70's Chrysler offered a police engine for the 360 but I'm not sure of the specific differences.  Camshaft, no cats?  With Chryslers police vehicles most of the differences were in special order equipment for that car.  What I mean is heavier shocks than you could ordinarily get in a Fury for example.  With Mopar, a lot of the "standard" equipment was pretty heavy duty as it came so I think you'll find that although there are certainly some examples of unique equipment for police use, much of it was the same as you could order on your family sedan.  The other two of the big three sold some pretty light duty family cars so it was a greater necessity for them to create special police packages.  I am sure there are a lot of experts on here who know these cars better and wil give you the straight story but I think overall, Chrysler drivetrains didn't become too "police" special until the mid 70's.

I met a guy here near my work that had a 71 Charger SE, he was restoring. He claimed to have worked at Chrysler in the early 70s and special ordered this car with a Washington state police pursuit engine. He said the 440 had 6 pack internals and a single 850 cfm carb from the factory. The car had a "U" code in the VIN. I could never get him to produce any documentation of this "special" order. The backseat was in the car and looked like it may have never been out..but he wouldn't let me look for the build sheet..I didn't press him hard.

P.S.: Do the new Police Package 5.7L Chargers have anything different with them? It would be cool to say I have a Cop Powerplant in my car. That could just scare some people.

............Or you could just a kick butt stroker big block for far less money and scare them cause they couldnt touch you .

I had a 72 Fury Highway Patrol car .  Picked up cheap had  bad timing chain. First car.  440 HP/steel crank/six pack rods/mag.cam/8.2 C.r./727T.f. with 4 gear planetarys. Lot of heavy duty stuff.
Went 15.4/94mph with fresh valve job. (4500 lbs)
Pulled motor made 446 11.0  put in 68 RT Charger 500. Sold 3 years later. (I screwed up)
70-73 cop 440hp. should be good engine to build .  Twocents:
