Hey Guys and Gals. One of my friends/roomates is a tow truck driver. Early this morning he got a call to go to a roll over about 35 miles from where we live. When we get up there, there is a 02 Honda Accord about 100+ feet off of the road on its roof. We go out and hook it up to recover it. When we get the car over I can not believe the damage. The car is mutilated. It rolled 4 and a half to 5 and a half times before coming to a rest on its roof. I ask the officer if the guy lived. To my amazement he said that not only did he live, but he walked away. Let me tell you. Seat belts and air bags DO save lives. This guy would no longer be with his family if it was not for both of them. Here is a pic right after recovery. I will try to get better pics today. Jeremy

Wow, not mention the car itself he was in. If your gonna crash hard, thats a good choice to do it in.

rollovers are funny that way either they walk away, or are f'ed up. its never in between.

i've never rolled up to a mvc rollover and been like thats gotta hurt, it always Wow he's walking or OH SHIT...

If you have no vision or creative spirit, you can always fall back on the way the factory did it.

I experienced once a roll-over Minivan heading straight towards me.. Luckily I was in the right lane and it missed me and my '68 Charger R/T on the trailer. Came to a halt, ran over to check to see if the people in it were ok expecting the worst (came across a fatality accident once to render first aid and it's not a pretty sight). In this case, there was only one elderly woman and she, marvellously, was fine other than a bump on the head.. This minivan must have rolled 5 to 6 times.. It rolled at least 3 by the time it passed me..... Every window was bashed in and every corner was crushed except for the driver's corner..  All she could say was her husband was going to be mad... Apparently, she dropped her cell phone, swerved and over corrected and there she went..............

Very true.

My 60yo mother rolled a Grand Cherokee on a black-iced highway overpass about 4 years ago.  She was going full highway speed, it rolled at least three times and came to rest upside down in a rocky ditch.  She came to her senses hanging upside down by her seatbelt.  She climbed out through the windshield hole without a scratch on her.  Not even any serious bruising afterwards.

I know another guy who rolled an old Neon R/T on a windy two-lane about 10 years ago when he was racing a friend.  This one was even more amazing.  He was going over 100 mph with NO SEATBELT, rolled the thing multiple times, got thrown out of the car, and he walked away fine.

I've seen folks walk away from cars that looked much worse. The driver side roof area and A pillar looks to be in good shape on this particular car....but a passenger would not have fared so well.  :icon_smile_blackeye:

I work on an extricaton "rescue pump" so we see a lot of MVC's. Just last night we were at a local automotive boneyard playing with the hydraulic spreaders/cutters & ram. Every wreck is different and presents unique challenges.

It's crazy that the auto industry refuses to put a little more metal thickness into the roof & side pillars.

They'll add 50 pounds (and $5000 per car, and millions of dollars of R&D) worth of airbags rather than add 25 pounds of cheap mild steel.  Whenever the side/rollover issue gets pushed, they just make the pillars larger-diameter and still won't thicken the metal.

I mean, Jesus, they're already stamping & welding on much thicker metal sections with the subframe rails.  Would it really cost THAT MUCH MORE to use some of that thicker steel for the pillars too?

Been there done that!  My car was wwwwaaaayyyyy worse.  Glad the driver was ok :2thumbs:
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?
