volatge regulator

i upgraded from points to elctronic iginition on my 69 with the 383 my alternator has the on wire deal so i purchased the transistorized voltage regulator from the paddock i installed it this morning and i see no change from the mechanical one when i give it throttle the needle on the (aftermarket gauge) shoots to 16 and my temp gauge(aftermarket also) shoots up a little i thought this transitorized vr might cure this problem..... any ideas? at idle it reads a steady 14 volts
