Almost a WIW Question

First thing I should say is that the car isn't really for sale, but this year I want to do a few things to my house & know I definitely have to sell at least 2 cars at some point for various reasons. The main reason, is that between the house & all the cars that need work, I'm in over my head & don't see anything getting done. The '68 isn't the year Charger that's my favorite, the '69 is, so that's the only reason I was considering it. If I were to sell it, I'd probably look for a '69 at a later date. I'm not sure which other car I'd sell either, but the only two I know I won't sell are my '69 Satellite ragtop & the '70 Road Runner coupe. The '68 Coronet 500 ragtop, the '71 Scamp, & the '71 Barracuda are the others I have.

I have a general idea of what my '68 Charger is worth, but I suppose what I'd like some opinions on, is whether or not I should sell it the way it is, or find the time to start some reassembly & sell it, or just forget about it & unload something else. The way it sits it's a rust free shell with all new sheet metal installed. I would at least put the 8-3/4" rear in that I have, as well as mount the front K-Frame & suspension so it can be moved easily. I don't have the time to reassemble the car, but the parts that I've accumulated for it over the last several years are wrapped & boxed.

A lot of the parts aren't ready to bolt in, they're used & need to be refinished, so it makes no sense to install them. Things like the heater box, the whole interior, the grille assembly, hood, nice tail lights, etc. I have one nice fender that was originally a '69 converted to a '68, & a somewhat decent '69 fender from a parts car. Other than the motor & trans, it's basically all there now & only needs to have finishing body work to be ready for paint.

The car was originally a 383-2V with an auto trans, floor shift, & A/C. There was never a build sheet & I believe the fender tag isn't the correct one & possibly from a different car. I have a clear, transferrable registration, which on cars older than 1974 in NY is like a title, so there is no headaches in the paperwork department. The only damage I ever saw on the car was signs from an old accident that was repaired ages ago. It must have been hit in the rear passenger side because the frame rail shows signs of being straightened as well as the rear package shelf support behind the upper rear seat.

Anyway, how saleable does everyone think a rust free, rolling shell in primer is, with boxed parts, grille, tail lights, seats, console, & some additional sheet metal like the hood, doors, trunk lid, etc?

Well, it isn't a heavy project car IMHO, just basically some finishing and assembly.  Sounds like you have most the parts as well.

I'll throw $9-10K out there because of the car's condition(ie, no rot)

I was thinking $10,000 also before i read your post Mike.  Doing metal work gets real old real fast, all you need to do with this car is a blast the light rusty spots, prime, filler, and paint.  Re-assembly is the fun part.  Make the car a roller Bob and i'll venture a guess that it brings $10k on ebay..

Now your Coronet, is probably only worth a couple hundred bucks, i'll come take that off your hands..  :icon_smile_big:

I would agree with what you were saying about doing some of the assembly to get it into roller condition since a roller is worth more since it can be moved/transported you'll have more potential buyers.

Sell the Corovert - from what you've told me it's too far gone.
Sell the E-body - this is DodgeCharger.com dammit  :icon_smile_big:   Use that $ to pay for the others.
Fix the leak or whatever is wrong with the Scamp and drive it to the Fiesta at Adams Tuesday.
Get the Road Runner parts lined up to finish that after the Scamp is operational.   
Send the Charger body out for paint while you're thinking about the motor and trans.

Don't forget to stock the fridge and invite mopar buddies from the area to come over and help work on these projects.  :cheers:

It is pretty complete & going by memory, which can be a bad thing....lol, I'm pretty sure that whatever's missing is minor, but also now available aftermarket. I actually have a complete drive train for when I reassemble it, a non original 440, 727 trans, but would need to keep it if I sold the car.

Not having to do the metal work was the biggest reason I bought it. I spent close to a year on & off, looking for a '69 to use as a "donor" for my Charger convertible project. The Coronet was to be the base car since it was a ragtop, & the rear clip was to come off the Charger. Of course once I had the cars side by side to take measurements & such, it was beyond my capabilities in body work. Also, I couldn't bring myself to cut up a totally rust free Charger to do it. Had I found the '69 parts car I bought later on first, well.......I'd have a Charger ragtop right now as planned.

A couple of hundred for the Coronet?.......Hmmmm...... I can let you have the two new floors for that.   :D

Yeah, it was a pain in the ass DRAGGING IT up & onto the car trailer when I bought it.   :lol:

I have a plan for that, don't worry. I've been saving cardboard boxes for a long time & will stack them in the exact shape & height of where the Charger is now, & throw a car cover over it so it'll never leave me too much empty space.  :D

Yeah, the Corovert is probably going to be the first casualty. I got the papers back from Broadway Title a few weeks ago & went to DMV to get the registration. All I need now is, the "transferable registration" from Albany. Once I get that in a couple of weeks, you may see it in the local paper.   ::)

The Barracuda is for sale one day, & not for sale the next.   :lol:   I just saw Rick Ehrinburg driving a 383 Cuda convertible the other day.   :o  Did you know he had that? Damn thing was freakin' gorgeous & I wish I had my camera with me when I stopped by Empire to see it. (Yes, Empire is around the corner from my office.)

The Scamp needs more than a "leak" fixed, as you put it. The rear is out, the springs need to be stripped, painted & reinstalled, the drive shaft needs to be cut & balanced, the brake lines have to go in, the exhaust.......hmm, the lack of exhaust, no interior, well, lets just say it won't be ready by Tuesday. :smilielol:

I'm going to try my daughter's method on what goes & what stays.........eany, meany, miney, moe..........

Rick drove it to Bear Mt. the other night.  It was in his garage for several years sitting and accumulating value.   He should have sold it last year before the fall.    I found this on popyourhood.com    Unfortunately I can't save the pic so I have to hotlink it.  O well.   
Shafi Keisler's 71 Cuda is in Empire right now also - getting a 6.1 hemi / 5 speed deal along with paint.
