Hey guys/gals,

Found a good deal on a Dana 60 rear, but what length rear will fit under my 3rd gen? Can i modify it if its too long? Or just go with a different backspace on the rims? Im not very familiar with Dana rears except for the fact that they can take quite a bit of abuse (sorry for the ignorance). The length of it is 63".

Thanks for the help,

Frank

http://members.aol.com/doctordiff/   All the info you'll ever need with pretty decent prices. Yes, you can have it cut you what ever length you want. Have a talk with that guy in the link.

All '71-'74 B bodies shared the same 63" overall width and 47.3" spring centers so the Dana is from a '71-'72 B body and it will be a drop in.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks for the replies,

From what he's told me its out of a ford truck. Im going to see if i can get some numbers off of it. For the price though i might consider flipping it to fix up my front end then find a new rear when i have the money to stroke the 400. What would be the going rate for a rear of this type?

mally69

Im not sure of a going rate on it. I got a dana 60 out of a ford truck that was not full floating  with 4.10 and powerlock for nothing from a local guys junk yard. I never got to deal with a price, he told me to take it. Hopefully you get the same treatment as i did  ;)

FLG

The guy has both a full floater and semi for sale. I could prob pick up both for around 250$, maybe less. Both are complete form drum to drum. Not sure on the gear ratio, will know soon.

mally69

either one WILL be able to be cut down to fit. I would try to snag both if you can.

FLG

ok, let me see what i can do. Just waiting for the info on the gear ratio. If i can snag both and sell one of them to make up for the cost and still have some money left over id be more then happy. Think thats possible?

mally69

Good thought and possible, if you get them cheap enough..

FLG

Ok,

He sold the full floater. The semi-floater BOM is 605169-7, making it a 83 Dana out of an F-250. Gears are 3.54.

So, can i have some opinions? Should i buy it? He wants 85$ and its complete from drum to drum.

mally69

I would at that price. :yesnod:

FLG

Thats what im thinking mally,

Anyone else have an opinion?

Would like to tell him "I'll take it"

Looking at this page,

http://www.rsgear.com/catalogs/Diff/Dana_Ford_60_2.pdf

It says the differential type is "standard"...i take it this means its an open diff?  :shruggy:  :-\  :'(

$85.00 for a Dana 60 is a steeeeeeeeal... I stole mine as well. $50.00 with a power-loc and 4.10s.  I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Thanks steve,

Can you just explain to me what it means by "standard" in the link to the pdf file i posted?

FLG

ok,

Found out its not a posi unit, he said he will work with me on the price if im still interested...

How much money am i looking at if i want to make this thing posi?

Thanks,

Fank

Sorry, I just noticed the link again..

I have a buddy that builds many D-60's using truck rear ends. The price he gave you is damn cheep for around here. He buys sure grips on ebay often with gears for under 150 bucks. I don't know exactly what it costs to build it complete, but he built and sold one not too long ago for $1000.00 with new bearings, axles and 3" studs.

Sometimes it's all in who you know....

Dr. Diff had one all done and powder coated in Vegas for 1100 bucks.  What a deal......

Thanks steve,

One more question. I noticed the Dana has no pinion snubber, now what do i do when later this year i decide to build my 512 or 470 stroker?

I'm considering it...if i dont take the deal ill be happy to pass the info along to someone who would.

Steve P.

You don't really need a pinion snubber with Super Stock springs. Not with Cal-Tracs either..

Anytime you are looking for a DANA 60 you should make sure that BOTH axle tubes are long enough to cut to the size you need. Some trucks have a very short axle tube on one side and that tube will need to be blown out and replaced with new DOM tubing. It's not worth the hassle or cost when so many are still available.
