Hey all just wanted to get yall's thoughts here. I pulled my transmission out from my project car while I was working on front end and engine stuff. I sent it in to get it checked out and to find out why it does not shift when it seems it should at higher speeds. The transmission was sent to AAMCO (found out later that they do not have a good rep in the real world) any ways I suspect they screwed it up worse. Now it does not shift at all and seems to stall a lot. Any ideas what could be causing this? I supposedly have a 1 year warranty but not sure if I want them to do anything more with it, as they may make matters worse. I am at the crossroads of trying to rebuild it myself (first time) or take a chance on another shop if there are any good ones here in Dallas Fort Worth area. Any advice?

If the trans won't upshift, the first thing to do is eliminate the kickdown linkage adjustment as the problem; temporarily disconnect the linkage at the transmission lever, if it still won't shift the problem is internal.

Thanks for the response I will check it out tomorrow.  I have another question though since there is aways more than just one question. I did away with my factory exhaust manifolds and replaced them with headman hedders. I instructions said that i had to modify the linkage which meant that I had to cut one of the ears off that the push rod mounted too and reweld it 180 degrees out. Now the transmission starts in 1st  which is now park and everything else is reversed. I know this is a real stupid question but I assuming that the problem is self inflicted from my modification. The need to know orientation of the shift lever on the transmission. When the shift lever is all the way forward the car seems to be in park yet reads 1st and when it is pushed aft it seems to be in first yet reads park. Is it a self inflicted problem and I need to reweld put it back the way it was?

The transmission lever position all the way to the rear is Park, full forward is "1". With the mods you made I wouldn't want to guess what gear it's in but I think you named your own poison...the mods are at the root of the problem.

John I repositioned and rewelded the linkage assy back so this part is now correct. Back to the other problem I removed the kick down linkage and took the car for a spin around the parking lot, this is what happened: When I accelerated The car did not seem to shift at all and reved the motor , when I let off the gas the car seemed to stop, not like the engine was reving down but more like somone applied the brake hard. I do not know whats going on here, any ideas?

I would guess the rebuilder screwed it up.

I had the same problem with a transmission that I rebuilt. My problem turned out to be in the valve body. After removing disassembling and reassembling the valve body several times I finally figured it out.  (looked correct the first time :icon_smile_blackeye:) Springs and valves were mixed up. Works like a dream now. Hope this helps.   Grumpy
