Well I broke down and bought a Honda.  I never thought I'd own one, but with gas prices the way they are, and with rumors that gas will rise more in the coming months I decided it was time to get a six.

Anyhow, I am now finding out that it isn't as good on gas as the reviews say it is supposed to be.  KBB and others state that this car is supposed to get 20mpg in the city and 28mpg on the highway.  As of now, I have gotten roughly 115 miles on half a tank.  So according to "my" math, I would get roughly 230mpg in the city on one tank.  So that would be approximately 14mpg.  I don't stomp on it so it is pretty disappointing that is all I am going to get.  My Dodge Ram with the 5.9 was getting roughly 10 in the city.  Is this pretty common for these cars?  Does driving with the D4 over D3 in the city play any role in the mpg it gets?  Any input would be great.

P.S.  I am happy with the car as far as comfort, the way it handles, etc...  Just not happy with the gas mileage.

i have a 1987 honda CRX-Si that gets 27 mpg and i like it but i dont drive it in the winter.i tried it once and almost went in the ditch.it only has 32000 miles on it and every kid i see wants it .mine is a 5sp  don

I would leave it in d4 all the time. When I had my accord the car used to average a little over 400 miles on a tank of gas city/highway and thats with a somewhat heavy foot.

Just 6T9 CHGR

The Monroney stickers back in '01 list the average gas mileage under perfect conditions.  i think the newer cars ('08 & up) have gone to a more realistic testing procedure....

My wife's '05 V6 Honda Odyssey averages 13-14 in the city as well...I get the same in my '03 Pathfinder

Hybrids are the way to go

EDIT---from Wikpedia

QuoteCalculations of MPG overestimated

The EPA laboratory measurements of MPG have consistently overestimated fuel economy. This results in a shortfall of about 15 percent in actual vs. measured CAFE goals. Starting with vehicles in model year 2008, the EPA is improving their estimates of MPG. This change does not affect CAFE ratings, only Consumer Guide values will change to reflect more realistic fuel efficiencies.

Depends - my wife has a '06 Accord 4-cylinder. Around town we get about 24mpg but on the hwy it'll get between 32-34mpg - I average about 450-475 miles per tank when I drive from NYC to the South Carolina - that's pretty damn good if you ask me.

What do you guys that live in the larger urban areas consider "city" driving? Is it stop and go traffic with some expressways thrown in for good measure or is it generally anything that doesn't involve uninterupted highway driving?

If I drove around my town top speed would be at 25 - 30 mph for about 1/2 a mile and then I would have to turn around.  ;)

Thanks for the input guys.  I may have to start looking for a 4 cyc although my wife may not like it since we just got this '01 Accord two weeks ago.  Oh well!!  :shruggy:

maybe you should track it for a few tanks to get an actual mpg before you give up. a half a tank guesstimate is not an accurate measurement. a 4 cyl should do much better though.

We had some Hondas at the Detroit Autorama this past weekend. They were in the COMPACT class LOL Ray

I have a '00 300 with the 3.5 motor.  The overall mileage is 17.8, not far off the claimed 18 city and 26 highway.  That includes starting it in the morning and letting it idle + 95% city driving.
It's a nice little luxurious rig.

Before this I had a '89 Cougar and they said that when driving around town to keep it out of Overdrive.  They were also supposedly notorious for tranny problems but all it was, was a $5 plastic piece up on top of the motor that kept the car from shifting out of second.  Ferd had a tranny replacement racket going but it also played into their quality stigma.  I found this all out from an internet forum.  ;)

My '04 accord dx 4 cylinder gets great milege. Almost 500 miles to the tank on hwy. no sh!t.  When the fuel light comes on I still drive it for a week or so before i actually need to get gas. If i didn't have the honda as a daily car i wouldn't have been able to keep my charger. :scratchchin:

:iagree:

Shape of the fuel tank can make a difference.  My Firebird gets 250 miles on the first half of the tank, lucky to get 75 miles out of the second half.

I drove a VW back in the '90s so I could afford to buy parts for the Super Bee. 36mpg was great, couldn't haul much in it though, kept having to borrow trucks. Ray

I have a 2001 Acoord as my everday driver and I love it Ive put 70,000 miles on it in 2 years and havent had any problems at all. My car is a 4 cylinder 5 speed and I get between 31-34mpg out of it a buddy of mine has the excact same car but his is a V6 auto and he only gets around 20-22 out of it.

BMOTOXSTAR

I have a 91' Accord. That motor will run forever, 300,000 miles on that car. :2thumbs:

I drive my Ram SLT with a V8 everyday. I don't care about gas milage that much since I only drive 5 miles a day average. I would loose money buying a Honda. I would have to buy it tag it and insure it. My truck then is depretiates everyday if i drive it or not.....and the payment still has to be made. In over 30 years of driving me and my wife have never driven an import.  :icon_smile_big:

Yes, it is a V6 Accord EX.  I am very happy with the car overall.  This thing handles better than any other car that I have driven, for daily driving purposes, that is.  The only thing I am b***hing about is the mpg this car is going to get according to my calculations.

The V6 accord does not do as good as it should. The funny thing is about the Hybrid accords is that they dont get any better than the non Hybrid. Same with the civics. But people keep buying them. I work at a honda dealer and can ask the techs what they would recommend. If anyone has questions about Toyota, Scion or Honda.  I can help. We deal in all three.  I would still take a camry over a accord. They do get better MPG.

Dooh!!  I forgot to mention that I did check that out the first time you posted.  Sorry about that.  Unfortunately, Edmunds also states that this particular Accord is supposed to get 20mpg in the city and 28mpg in the highway.  Thanks for the heads up .

I totally agree.  My mom's Camry seems to go on forever with one tank of gas.
