Speedometer and cable......help!

At one point during my restoration, I connected the speedo cable that came with the car and drove around the block....... the speedometer jumped all over the place. I removed the cable and tossed it. There was some damage to the casing to begin with and a friend told me that the cable was probably damaged internally and the cause of the speedometer jumping. My problem now is that the speedometer needle is stuck on "10" mph. Anyone know if that means it's shot? or do I go to the trouble of connecting the cable to determine this?
Also, where exactly does the speedometer cable route? It was not in place when I bought the car...... does it travel through the left front wheel well somehow? I know I gotta keep it away from the headers as the old one was all melted.  :rotz:   Thanks, Andy  :icon_smile_cool:

yes - the speedo cable runs down in the engine compartment i believe...    shouldnt be close to headers at all...

I'll take a few pics of where the speedo cable runs on my 72 tomorrow.

the speedo cable is routed down the inner fender & under the drivers floor where there is a clip to hold it tight to the floor , the cable should sneak over the top of the header collector to the tranny , the speedo head has some problem if it is not returning to zero , often it can be easily repaired by cleaning greasing or tweaking it

The cable goes thought the fire wall as you can see, then as it runs down the fire wall through a C-Clip attached
to the bottom of the body. It goes just over the T-Bar as this picture shows, I melted mine on the headers as
well, but if you route it this way you will be OK.

Thanks guys, especially 8wheeler for the pic. I'll give it a shot next chance I get. It will be nice to have a speedometer....... if for nothing else just to know if I'm being tailgated or am just too slow on the road!
I saw a pic somewhere of a 2nd gen charger and it had a cable(?) or something in the wheel well behind the tire. anyone know what that could be? Maybe it wasn't meant to be and its an anomoly? I wish I had the pic to share..... thats what made me think maybe it was the speedo cable location. When I got my 68 it had pretty well been molested already so if something isn't obvious I end up asking here. Cheers! Andy  :icon_smile_cool:

chargerandy, What you see in the wheelwell is the parking/emergency brake cable.

After having tranny work done on my car, the speedo jumped around. It was due to the gear that goes into the transmission not being correctly reinstalled.

Is there any instructions somewhere how to install the gear correctly?
