Transmission Pans

Since I'm building the tranny to go behind this 500+ cid motor, I got to wondering about adding a bigger tranny pan. I'm already going to a 7 qt oil pan so why not go with a bigger tran's pan too? Anyway here are some that I'm concidering:

Now, since I had good luck with Cope last time with parts, I decided to give them a hollar, and see what they said, based on info I gave them, here's what they're reply was:
Here is a parts list I would go with for your build:

Bolt in sprag
TF-2 Shift kit
HD low reverse spring retainer
HP Street rebuild kit
Bands
Deep pan


So...... When it comes time to get stuff ordered up, basicaly after the holidays, I will need to start pricing stuff up, and get things ordered up. Luckily I'm still young enough (however 21 has come and gone) to where my dad has his own shop, and luckily he's got a guy who works there that rebuilds transmissions, so I'm gonna get him to rebuild this one for me, but of course, I'm gonna supply the parts.... Anyway, which one of the above listed pans would you go with? This is gonna be on my '72 Charger, like I said will have a 7 qt pan, and will also have dual 3" exhuast, so either way, I'm gonna loose some ground clearance, but the smaller the amount lost, the better.....

HR, either pan will work fine. I've used the stamped steel MP pan a few times with good results and those go for ~ $50.00 or so. One thing you will need is a good transmission cooler. The B&M stacked plate supercoolers are excellent...much better than the tube & fin style. Buy a good cooler and any large capacity pan will work.

Which one would be best in my case? I don't readily see any GVWR listings, so..... Which one? I don't see the need in getting one of the ones with the fan that's apart of it, so.... That will eliminate some of them...

I figure maybe for cooling, but the tranny already has ports for that, so.... What's with these, or are they for something else? If for something else, or cooling which I wouldn't see the need in it for my application so therefor, I wouldn't use this pan not seeing the need for it, but the others... Also, would a 2 qt extra cap or 4 qt be better? Either way, I would be planning on getting the fileter ext with it, so....

On that Moroso pan...the first plug is for draining the pan w/o removal and the 2nd plug is for a trans temp sending unit.

If you want to go with the aluminum pan it will work fine....just a little more $ and a different look.

Other than price and look, what would be the diff between the aluminum and steel? Strength, I fould think, wouldn't be a facotr, in that, the job of a fluid pan would be to hold the tranny fluid (even though transmissions when taken out are sat on the pan, and some times, but not very often, can hit a bump and knock the pan a little bit (I've never done this though)). What would be strengths and weaknesses of both? Also, would the aluminum seal better than a steel? In this case I'm thinking of the aluminum head on iron block senario (which the two are very different, but in this case it would be the two different metal comparisons)..... Also, would it be a good idea to run a tranny temp sender? If so then I'll go with the Moroso pan and add a guage....
As for the cooler, looks good to me.

If you can afford it the aluminum finned pan is better, inmo. It has cooling fins and they will usually seal up better because the pan rail does not flex. Mopar sells a very good pan gasket that is reusable and they work much better than the cork stuff....get one of those for sure.

As for the temperature guage...it's not needed for a street application because you won't be running a real loose converter. That B&M supercooler is awesome...your trans will luv you for using it !

I'll second the vote for the Summit cast aluminum pan, it's s quality unit at a decent price. The added strength afforded by the cast pan may not seem like a big issue but it sure doesn't hurt to have it.
