Center console decal

Getting ready to put the wood grain decal on my center consol.  The metal seem a bit pitted (bumpy) should I sand or polish it  or will this cause more problems with the decal?  Do I need to wipe the metal down with anything special to make it stick?

You could sand it a bit to get the lumps out. Yes you will have to clean it too. You could use many things, but I just use IP Alcohal.
