Exhaust manifold stud removal??

My 73 440 has the stock exhaust manifolds on it. I could hear an annoying popping sound from the passenger side manifold. I tried snugging down all the nuts. The nut nearest the firewall would not snug up. The threads on that stud are stripped. So I removed the manifold. Doing so one of the studs in the center, the one with the long barrel type nut came out of the head and let anti frieze leak all over the floor.   :rotz: I put the stud with the barrel nut still on it in my vice. I heated up the barrel nut and got it off of the stud, put some RTV on the threads and put it back in to the head. Leak stopped!

Now for the stripped stud nearest the firewall, I cant get it out of the head. I ran two of the nuts all the way down the stud where the threads are still good and tried backing it out of the head. It wont come out. Feels like the nut keeps turning but the stud is not.

Any suggestions to get it out without breaking it off in the head?

Are these studs special? They have a fine thread on the nut, what kind of thread goes in to the head?

Thanks, Paul

3/8-16 thread (Coarse thread in the head, 3/8-24 on the other end) If you can get a welder in there, weld the nut to the stud.....then while its still hot, drip some candle wax on it so that it will wick into the threads in the head....should come right out then.. Good luck.

there is a stud remover tool that you can put on it and use a breaker bar to remove it.  you can find it at oreilly's or autozone.  it is a lisle tool i believe.

this is a link that shows the picture, same one you can find in the above stores.

Well, the stud broke off in the head  :eek2:. I guess the head is going to come off for stud extraction.

The engine was rebuilt about 10k to 15k miles ago. It runs great but is there anything I could do while the head is off? If I have to pull one head pulling the other is not that much more difficult.

What can be re-used and what should be replaced? Like gaskets, bolts etc.

You can get the kit of studs and special nuts for the manifold from Year One.  I think their long nuts are stainless steel.  Seems like their price wasn't too bad either.  I think these items are still available from the dealer but identifying the part number may be difficult.  Our imbecile dealer threw the old books away so unless you can tell them the part number for them to see if there are any in the system, they can't look it up.  I wonder if putting some antiseize on the threads of these would help for later?  But maybe you have to put sealant on some of them since they penetrate the water jacket.   I know one of the experts on here will advise us as to the proper way of installing these items.  I wouldn't even think of reusing the head gaskets or the intake/valley gasket.  And I don't think the exhaust manifold has a gasket.  Don't know if you can reuse the valve cover gasket or not.  I suppose so if it was made of neoprene but not if it was cork.
