WHen i step on the brake pedal to alt meter goes down and when i hit the signal light either way the alt meter pulese to the flash of the signal what the heck is it this is on my 68 charger

Ghoste

What it is, is perfectly normal.

lee

it didn't do that before with my 383 in there and now it does it with the 440

Ghoste

It must have been sticking?  During normal operation, the alt guage should be neutral or slightly to the right (charge) and when you brake, it should dip to the left and depending on load, it may stay in the discharge side while braking at idle or it may come back over to the charge side.  When signaling, it should pulse to the discharge with each flash of the lights.  The electrical load and the alternator ouput will have an effect on the amgnitude of this movement but it is normal for the alt guage to dance around in old Mopars.
Now if you are applying a load and it goes far into the discharge and stays there, that would indicate a problem IMO.

Oh i also forgot to say that when the lights are on the needle is pretty far down from the half way mark

Rolling_Thunder

typical...    as long as when you are driving normally the needle goes to the charging side...        its normal to be discharging buring braking, and having lights on...

Lee, are the headlights dragging it down all the time or just when the car is idling?
