i have a 69 charger with a decently built 440 and the convertor matches my cam specs and all but heres the problem
i have a B&M holeshot 3000   3000 stall  and im running 4.11 gears  ,,,, when im cruising about 45-50 mph when the tranny is already in high gear then floor it it will slip to about 4000 -4500 rpm  but stays in high gear, and yes my kickdown linkagae is all hooked up correctly    whats the deal it shouldnt rev that high ???   also when im putt ing around in second gear and mash it it goes to about the same rpm...   i did however when i changed the tranny fluid i had the filter installed upside down , but i knew as soon as i went to go that i had drain the fluid and flip that around so i did. i dont think that hurt anything.

ok i just drained the fluid again it looks like dark maroon mettalic paint i beilieve its very very small aluminum particles all through the tranny fluid , the tranny is definalty going to come out but  what would be going bad inside???  anyone have an idea of what going on  :shruggy:

It could be several things, i'm no tranny expert, but it could be band adj. or clutches or even the converter, just take it to a good tranny guy, i'm sure it'll need a complete tear down & cleaned, the converter will also have to be cleaned & checked, did you just install this B&M converter & all this happened :scratchchin:

mally69

no i just finished the car last year its the first stall convertor i  ever used, had the tranny rebuilt and all with a b&m shift improvement kit and  but i was told b&m convertors were junk after i had it already convertor installed

B&M converters aren't the best out there from what i've heard, what stinks is whatever happened, it sent trash throughout the tranny & it needs a tear-down :-\

good thing i have an extra 727 laying around...  a local guy has a 727 that has a tag on it that says it was build by b&m  i wonder if that would be worth buying

It depends on how much he wants for it & how much run time it has, if it were me, i would take that extra tranny & bring it to a reputable tranny shop & have it rebuilt, have them install the motorhome clutches & ALL new seals, then send that converter to PTC & let them fix it or just buy ya a new one from them, tell them Joe Gallo sent you, Tim should hook you up :2thumbs:

A lot of things could be causing the slippage but the fact that it won't kick down to 2nd at 50 mph could perfectly normal. The 4.10 gears make the trans think you're going faster than 50 mph and (depending on the governor) there is a limit at what speed it will kick down.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

The Dark fluid is not a good sign. It needs to be rebuilt with fresh clutches, steels and bands that are appropriate to the engine build. Cope Racing Transmissions has an excellent reputation.  :2thumbs:

I would also talk to John about a converter while you're at it.  ;)

I had never thought of this! is there an rpm range that the trans should kick down from 3rd to 2nd? ( stock governor)

A 440 with 3.23 gears will have a 3-2 kickdown limit of 60-70 mph, but with 4.10 gears the same trans would think you're going about 85 mph.
