Can anybody tell me what needs to be done to put a 426 hemi in a 1970 Dodge Charger. I got lucky and left a mopar price guide and hemi magazine in the bathroom of my dads airplane hanger. He came into town a couple of weeks and must of looked at the magazines. He took me buy suprise and  told me if he sells his railroad company he will get me a hemi engine for my charger. I told him did you know dad it will cost around 15,000 for a crate hemi and he said that is fine. So i hope the sale happens. Just curious on what i am going to have to do to install a crate hemi.

Is your dad considering adopting any kids in the near future? I'm potty trained and have an A&P ticket.

The first place you'll want to visit is Schumacher for conversion engine mounts   http://www.engine-swaps.com/  that will mate the Hemi to an existing V8 K-member and the Hemi will bolt up to any big block transmission.

Luckily just about everything else needed for the conversion is readily available, jkust bring money.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

The more important question is: how stock do you want it to look? There are several threads in the Tech section that cover it pretty well. Basically you'll need several thousand more dollars after you buy the engine (if you can get one) but, luckily, the 70 uses the one air cleaner that has a relatively cheap reproduction. If you want to also switch to a 4-speed when adding your Hemi then expect to spend many more thousands of dollars as well since the bell housing, starter, and flywheel are unique to the Hemi. Most all of the accessory brackets and pulleys are unique to the Hemi as well as the brake master cylinder and the skid plate on the k-frame.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

If original stock look is what you are after order a Hemi K member from Mega Parts. The Schumacher mounts hold the motor 1/2" higher then stock.

I have been looking at the hemi block with the 440 mount ears for my 73. Can't you order a complete crate hemi with the 440 ears......John

Ask HemiDoug about the stock location... ;) I agree, the Schumacher mounts do raise the engine a bit.

Yes, you can order one. Whether you get one this century is a coin toss (although Troy at WestOaks says they have them in stock so who knows). :D

You will need to upgrade all the driveline components if you expect to keep the car together. I don't know what you have already, but plan on at least an 8 3/4 for an automatic and a Dana 60 if it's a 4 spd. You will need a Hemi wiring harness, the battery cables, motor mounts, K frame (if using Hemi mounts), torsion bars, Heavy duty rear springs (preferably the SS springs), Hemi exhaust manifolds (or headers if you prefer), at least a 26" 4 core radator, Hemi pullies, power steering brackets (if so equipped), trans cooler (for auto trans), Off set booster (power brakes), upgrade to heavy duty brakes (11 inch drums at minimum/ disc preferred). That's all I can think of off the top of my head. You will need a lot of odds and ends by the time you are through...(such as linkage\kickdown levers, fuel lines\HV fuel pump, ect...)

I believe the wedge ears/mounts prevent the use of stock (repop) exhaust manifolds and some headers.
