Hey Guys,

My son's 71 Charger died on him the other day. Have checked everything I know. I am not getting any power from the neg side of coil when trying to start it. Power is going in on negative side of coil. No spark from coil or dist.

Pulled off engine wiring harness tonight to untape and check for broken wires. Any help would be appreciated.

Had coil checked and it was ok, ignition switch is good as is the starter relay, all put on new today. Has stock points set up.

ummmm... isn;t neg. side of coil switched to ground?

checked on my 70 charger and 73 RR and both of them, when you turn motor over with the key, the test light will light up on the neg side of the coil, but does not on the 71 we are tyring to fix.

so if you have 12v on the + terminal & nothing on the negative the winding in the coil is open , replace the coil

I agree.  There should be switched voltage TO the POS side, which will flow THROUGH the coil to the Neg side (so it will light a test light also).  When cranking the neg side should blink as it is triggered on and off to ground by the points/ignition module.  IF it is always grounded (dist. not turning, bad module, stuck shut point, pinched wire, etc.) it will NOT light the test light on the neg side of the coil either.  Best way to know for sure is to unhook the wire from the NEG. coil and check for power at the neg. coil tower itself.
