Have an opporunity to get a 68 318 charger for 5-6k.  The only problem is-no title. Car is complete and a good deal in today's market, but with no title I'm a little reluctant.I've been told that title companies won't work with my state(WI).Should I go ahead and get it or pass?Any "constructive" opinions appreciated!
Thanks Guys(and Gals)!

You need to find out why it doesn't have one first. If it legit you should be able to go back to the previous owner and get one.

If the guy who has the car is the last registered owner, he will have to go to the DMV to get a title with you. I have heard of cases that were they will allow a bill of sale as long as it is notarized. When I had my '69, I went to get just a title, and my car wasn't registered for so long, it wasn't even in the system anymore. I'd call the DMV and ask about all the options.

I have heard, but do not know for sure, that these guys will work for Wi. titles. Someone will correct me if I am wrong though. http://www.its-titles.com/

I just went through the same thing myself (in Oklahoma). If the seller is the registered owner, the easiest way is he needs to file for a lost title ($13) and it will be mailed to the registered address within a few days. If he is not the registered owner, call the tag agency with the VIN and ask who is the registered owner. You may have to call a few to get one that will tell you. Then, track down the registered owner and either get them to file for a lost title or have them get a notorized bill of sale saying they sold the vehicle to you.
I myself ended up getting a notorized bill of sale from the registered owner (which is what I was told by a tag agency was good enough). When I went to get the title transferred, the tag agency I went to said they needed a Title, period. So I went to another one and they told me the same thing, so I had to convince them that a notorized bill of sale is sufficient, and they took it. I only wish I remembered the tag agency I called that told me about the bill of sale, it would have went smoother.
Your state may be different so I recommend calling a tag agency and ask them.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.

I used them years ago for a motorcycle and it went through the state of Texas no problem (and I've been told it's a major hassle here).  I was very happy with their services.  All I had to do was transfer the new title they sent me at the local tax office.
I love the smell of nitro in the morning.
