hi guys, thought someone would give advice on removal of engine from 73 Dodge Sportsman RV van, Where does it come out of?

i prefer to just take apart the front end completely, but it is possible to pull it through the inside.

you can remove it from the front, you just have to remove the grille assembly and hood.  they were made to be done that way.  If you go from the inside, I believe you may have issues with the dash housing as you would need to come up and then back.  Of course, if you want to do this, then your transmission will be sure to be in the way of coming back away from your dash housing.  You will most likely have to remove your dash housing to facilitate a inside removal.

The vans were made to accommodate a frontal removal of the engine, so this is probably the most easy way to get it done.

Of course, I am only speaking from what I have seen others do and from my own personal experience of being around the vans to see the clearances ( have a 87 dodge van).  I have not removed an engine but have seen pictures of front removals.

hopefully someone else who has done these will chime in with fact proven experience.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Thanks very much, taking the engine out the front sounds like the way to go. :icon_smile_tongue: This engine is worth the extra work to get it, it has 50,000 miles on it  and the owner even started it for me

Growing up in my Dads mechanic shop thats the only way we did it.  Pull them out from the front.

We just did a '78 Sportsman with a 440. We had to do it through the inside (dash was not an issue, but it was close). The 360 go in and out on the '78 from the front with no problem. The big block was more of a challenge.

Hi again Guy's, with vacation  and work and pulling the engine, I've just now had time to respond back on how the engine finally came out of the van for me.  The engine could have come out of the front if I'd had the right lift, so plan B was to take it out of the pass. door, dropped the trans,  and out through the floor of the RV, had one of those adjustable lift chains and adjusted the center of gravity over the engine, and as we lifted the engine, we shifted the weight to the front of the engine and wiggle, wiggle, wiggle and out it came :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big: Less than 4 hours later, not bad for an amateur ;) Thanks again for the the advice, it was all good and helped a lot.
