HONOLULU - Real estate is often a long-term investment. But 10,000 years?

Lo'ihi Development Co. will soon start offering oceanview lots speculators won't even be able to stand on for many millennia. That's because they're currently submerged more than 3,000 feet below sea level — on an underwater volcano called Lo'ihi, located about 20 miles southeast of the Big Island.

That's funny.  About 18 years ago my 3rd grade teacher said it would be cool if you could buy land off of Hawaii that you knew would someday be an island.  I guess someone just took it one step farther.

I think it is just a silly as "pet rocks".

It is probably smarter than buying property below sea level, and not expecting it to be covered by water in the future.  Yes I'm looking at you New Orleans.   :D

are they selling flood insurance with that property?

I saw a speaking session that Robert Ballard gave last year.  (He found the Titanic, mostly studies oceans, presidential adviser about the oceans for decades, etc.)
He's convinced that the oceans will rise by several yards over the course of the next century.

He's smart/studied enough to possibly be correct.  But what really unnerved me is that he mentioned it with absolutely NO political agenda, no blame, and no calls to action to prevent it.  He was just asked about the subject from the audience, and he treated it like an offhand thing that he wasn't even very interested in talking about.  He was just like, "Well, yeah, it's happening and we can't stop it now.  It doesn't really matter whether people take the idea seriously or not because it's gonna get obvious within a few decades anyway."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If that were to really happen, then you could make an absolute killing  in real estate for your descendants right now.
It wouldn't be very difficult to turn thousands into millions, or millions into billions.

If you started with enough seed money right now and went at the idea whole-hog, then your last name might literally be up there with Rockefeller & Carnegie within a generation or two.

The land in hawaii is on an active volcano which every year the "underwater" island gets that much bigger and that much closer to the surface! They are hoping though that the volcano doesn't go inactive or an underwater tremor doesnt rip that place apart.
