When I bought one of my project cars the seller "promised" he would get the title to the car.   In fact in the bill of sale we both agreed that he would get the title within a certain time.  However the agreed time has long since passed.  So what would be the best way to go about getting a title to the car??  From what I understand if I go through a title service I have to have the car inspected (ready for the road)  before I can get the official title in my name.  However I don't want to spend 1000's on the car to get it road legal only to tear it back apart to start the resto.  So how do I need to go about this??? :shruggy:

either talk to him and have him get a duplicate title, or do what a few of my friends had to do, they had to sue the previous owner to get the title to the car, since the car is worthless without the title.

The only problem with a law suit to get the title.... the law suit would cost more than the car is worth.  :yesnod:   I know several people have told me about the title service companies but like I mentioned.  From what I understand I would need to get the car ready to have it licensed, insured, and then ready for the state inspection.   :brickwall:  I was hoping that someone has gone through all this before and could give me some pointers on how to go about this.

moparguy01

ya the only experience i had was having to sue the prior owner. you could try a title service, but since the other title actually exists and the owner is alive, its better to just get him to get a duplicate title. just offer to pay him for the fees to get a duplicate title.

I recently used a title service for one of my cars.

The process goes something like this:

1. Print out or call for the paper work.

2. Fill out the paper work and get it notarized.

3. Send the paper work and the $$$ to the title service.

4. Check your mailbox every day.

6. After checking the mailbox every day for three weeks, receive envelope from the title service.

7. Take contents of envelope and more $$$ to the local DMV.

8. Give the DMV the paperwork and $$$

9. Check mailbox every day.

10. After checking the mailbox everyday for about three weeks, discover an envelope from your

friendly state DMV.

11. Open envelope and bask in the glory of your new title.

No inspections, No begging the previous owner for something he doesn't have, No bullshit.

Here's the web site of the service I used:

You can't use a title service in NJ because NJ hates you and everybody else.

Good thing I'm not in New Jersey  ;)

Okay I talked to the guy that I bought the car from.  He still claims "the title search is in the works".  So I have a question.  Even though I doubt the previous owner is working on getting the title from the state.  What will happen if I go through the title service and then in the process the previous owner shows up with a title??   :scratchchin:  I have no idea why I am asking about that because the previous owner has been telling me the same story for quite a long time now.  But with my luck since I asked again it would light a fire under him and then we have two people working on getting the title to one car.  :brickwall:

The title service says that you have to check to see if it is already titled. If it already is and they try to get one you will probably lose your money and not get a title.

Okay how would I go about that??  Do I go to the DMV and ask about the title using the VIN??   The car was last tagged in 83.

bordin34

I don't know if they do thatI think they (DMV) charge for it but I THINK a cop friend can search the VIN and see any liens it has and if it had a title and other stuff.

Brian in GA

Just so you know, here's how it works (or doesn't in this case) in Georgia.  With that same scenario, if the title owner of record had lost the title, the state of Georgia would NOT issue a duplicate, or even if he had the title and you lived in Georgia, they would NOT transfer a title to you.  We issue titles on 1986 and newer vehicles, PERIOD.  I've run into this before, trust me.

If you were in GA or a state like it, even if you use a title service, a GEORGIA TITLE WOULD NOT BE ISSUED TO YOU!!!  It would be in your best interest to find out the laws of your state before contacting a title service and possibly wasting your money.

If you are in Texas you can get a "bonded" title without having to have the car roadworthy. the cost is quote reasonable, I've done it and it was around $150 or so.

Look into putting a mechanics lein on it.

How does the bonded title work??   I am wanting to start putting some money into the car but I want to get it titled in my name before I start.
