right now i have a 318 in my charger with a thermo quad carb on top, the carburetor is junk and we need to replace it to make the motor run right, the only problem is that i am hoping to rebuild a 440 to put in it at a later date and i would hate to put more money then i have to in the 318... so would a Holley 750 vacuum secondaries be alright for a 440?, also will it work on the 318 (I'm trying to balance the "right now" and "in the future" aspects of my car.)

The 318 should be using a 600 cfm carb....750 will be too big, inmo.

But it will be okay for the 440 (although they won't sneeze at a little bigger either).

The 750 is too big for the 318 & too small for the 440

sean68 that depends vastly on the engine build. Measure the head flow, cam size, gear ratio, converter size, engine displacement, fuel type etc. I've seen 750's on stock 440s and one or two 1050 cfm's on build high winding strokers.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

Most 440's will run fine with a 750 cfm carb unless the engine is heavily modified. I pefer the smaller venturies of a 750 cfm carb for better throttle response and low speed manners. If it's a race build launching at 4500 rpm off the line then yes a bigger carb will make slightly better power but low speed drivability will suffer.

what size should a 440 have?

Hollley aftermarket 6-pack..
(2) 500cfm on the outside and (1) 355cfm in the center
Mechanical linkage adjusted for 3/4 throttle on the center carb
assuming your "rebuild" will include some engine performance modifications

I lean more towards a 800 or 850 for a 440 properly tuned response will not suffer

if i was in your shoes and wanted to make one carb work for both engines then i think the 750 vacuum secondaries is the carb for you.  i do believe its a little big for a 318 and  CAN be to small for a 440   but it will work fine on both.     ive ben thinking seriously about ordering a prosystems 950 for my 452 though.
