I  need some input on how to go about painting my '71 R/T. It has been in AZ for most of it's life and still has the original paint. The paint is in very good condition, but the hood, deck lid and most of the area above the stripe are faded. I am considering painting only those areas. The car has a black vinyl top. I would like to leave it as original as possible, since it is such a well preserved car. My question is, should I paint only the areas mentioned , or paint the whole car ? What is the best paint to use to correctly duplicate the factory color? Here is a link to some pics  http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,27472.0.html

I would go over that car with a fine tooth comb, even though its been preserved well and in a dry atmosphere there is always that possibility of rust hiding somewhere especially under the vinyl roof..and around the rear window area where the vinyl meets the rear window channel ....I would also look in the air ducts near the cowling and against the firewall for debris that has gathered over the years ( Pine needles, ect..) an area that retains moisture well and will rust the heck out of the duct openings..under the carpet. rear pans..and where the trans tunnel meets the firewall..due to the jute padding may have been wet some time or another. The chrome by the Dutchman panel or trunk filler ..take all that off and check the channels ...The front window chrome as well..These are just some things I would do, in case you have not already..
Earth. Even the word sounded strange to me now... unfamiliar. How long had I been gone? How long had I been back? Did it matter? I tried to find the rhythm of the world where I used to live. I followed the current. I was silent, attentive, I made a conscious effort to smile, nod, stand, and perform the millions of gestures that constitute life on earth. I studied these gestures until they became reflexes again. But I was haunted by the idea that I remembered her wrong -Solaris

I agree with Charlie. Do all that and while apart, repaint.  Or garage it and keep as a survivor. Personally, I'd repaint.
