High Prices--The Paddock

I just got the shock of my life when I called "The Paddock" to order a radiator cap and blower motor vent tube.  The parts were high but they had them and I figured what the heck.  The radiator cap was $27.95 and the blower motor vent tube was $22.95.  I decided I could deal with this.  But when I was told that the shipping was going to be $19.95, I decided to look elsewhere.  That was to Chattanooga, TN.  I would advise folks to be very careful about ordering anything from "The Paddock".  Their shipping is exhorbitant.

That sounds like a rip off for shipping.  :icon_smile_blackeye: Of course, how much better is Year One in terms of pricing? Haven't bought anything from either in awhile. I always liked Harden's, bought a lot of sheet metal from their for my '74 Cuda years ago and felt like I got a good deal.

If they're going to mark up prices they should throw in free shipping. But they've got all the parts and we don't.  :brickwall:

I try to stay away from the paddock, there are many more place to choose from than there was just 10 years ago.  BEA parts is good, Hardens, and Dantes are others i have had good dealings with.

I agree.  I ordered about $250 worth of parts including a pressure brake bleeder system and the whole package was only 8 lbs.  Those idiots charged me $35 for shipping.  I figured it out through UPS and it only cost them something like $12 for shipping and they probably get a volume discount since they ship so much.  Never again! :flame:  I avoid them like the plague.

Paddock were the only ones to have the correct color arm rest for my 66 charger  and my shipping was $35.00  when the box arrived it was clearly stamped $14.00 from ups  I keep it onm a shelf to remind me not to purchase from them unless i'm really desperate.

Apparently they are owned by Year ONe. They are ARTISTS when it comes to gouging for shipping.

Yearone is actually slightly cheaper for some parts then the paddock. the only way to have a cheap resto for your is if your great at fab work. because otherwise the parts catalogs the only thing you've got.

That's because it took (3)  $7.00 per hour guys an hour to pack it and take it to the mail room..   1 to put it in the box. Another to try to find the mail room and a third to take the first two by the hand and show them the long way to get to the mail room..

Doesn't it sometimes make you wonder how some people find their way home??

that's why I wait until I get a free shipping code from Y1 at The Nats before I order from them

And I believe that if you check the restoration catalog from local Mopar Peformance dealer, you'll find the rad caps in there.  Not sure if they only have one style (there are a couple aren't there?) and I don't know the cost, but I do know they were supposed to be in the newest book and the shipping should be better.

Don't forget Bill (gtx6970).  He's a little cheaper on the radiator cap, but I'm sure a lot on shipping.  He gets all my money whenever I need something and he won't let you get something that's wrong for your application.

Having worked in mail order for 10+ years I'd like to remind everyone that it's called "Shipping and Handling" for a reason. The "handling" part covers the cost of the toll free phone number, warehouse equipment, boxes and packing materials, labels and label/invoice printers, as well as the salaries for the order takers, order pickers, order checkers (quality control), order packers, and the shipping department. Handling may also include the customer service lines and salaries and probably the returns department as well. The place I worked could handle anywhere from 3,000-7,000 orders per day but that required 20-30 full time phone personnel, 15-30 part-time phone personnel (we had 100 lines open 16 hours per day), 20-25 full-time warehouse employees, and as many as 50 part-time warehouse employees (sometimes seasonal). We guaranteed same-day shipping so items had to go out fast but every order still went through at least nine different people (in as fast as 15 minutes from call to trailer). Most places charge shipping on the price of the item/order (not weight unless it's oversize) which means someone ordering a single $1,500 item will pay the same as a person ordering 50 $30 items requiring multiple boxes and over an hour of processing time. We shipped many orders at a huge loss but would also make $1-2 on several thousand smaller orders so it mostly evened out. Our average shipping charge was around $8 I think. Obviously not all places work like that but we had people complain all the time about shipping charges and we weren't making a dime on them.

Prices are a completely different matter. Many places will try to undercut their competitors on price but make up the difference in shipping. Having the most expensive products AND the most expensive shipping is only viable for the largest vendors with the broadest selection.

I prefer to shop on ebay, usually can get better deals there. Shipping is expensive more since the higher gas prices.

Seems like in the last 2 or 3 years The Paddocks shipping has really jumped up. I won't be ordering from them anymore.
Summit charges a flat $10.95 and Jegs is $11.99 handling fee and no shipping charges unless its oversized.
I can order from them on a Sunday and have it in Oregon by Wedsday or Thursday.

Something screwy is going on with Paddock's, either Year One is running them out of business or theres some kind of tax wright off going on. :Twocents:

I take it back. If Year One owns Paddocks they nearly have a monoply on the industry, so they can get away with gouging the customer.
This could be good news for smaller operations like Dante's.

I'm pretty positive that Year One doesn't own The Paddock. I think that was a comparison (a joke) about the shipping prices. You don't fight off the competition by raising prices - at least smart businesses don't. There's plenty of room for both of them. The lure of those two places is that they are mostly one-stop-shopping. Yes, it's cheaper to buy individual items from several vendors but it can be a pain for people with no patience or who aren't worried about saving $1 here and $3 there. Year One also has exclusive distributor status on many items so you have no alternative (wiring harnesses come to mind).
