Head Grinding?

I was thinking about having my heads shaved down for a higher compression ratio and some more reliable HP.  I have a 1969 383 out of a Roadrunner in my car.  How much should I have them ground down?  I'm shooting for a 10/1 ratio or more.  are there any concerns (other than premium fuel) that I should be aware of?  What's the max. clearences and tolerences for that engine?  any help would be great

BTW As far as I know, the engine was rebuilt about 30k ago, and it runs great.  edelbrock 750, edelbrock semi highrise intake, accel super coil/7mm wires. otherwise stock (as far as I know)

What are the specs from the rebuild?  What is the piston deck height?  You will need to check the heads cc.  Plus is the block decked?  You will need to know what piston you are running right now and the specs on the heads (valve sizes, head casting number, and if the heads have been ported).

What is the rod length, block bore diameter, head cc, deck height (distance the piston is from the block deck), piston (flat or dome) if dome what cc,  and cam specs?

You will need this information so that you can decide on the options available.  You could use another set of heads to reach the 10.1 compression.

good luck

If its' a honest-to-gee-whiz RR motor....you are 10:1, but most likely now has composition head gaskets now. If so, swap them out for the thin shim gaskets. Milling heads is a tough way to increase C.R. How you r , etc.car runs depends on a lot of different things, weight, type of trans. and rear end gears.

Check the Piston info first, like 67_Dodge_Charger says, particularily, how far down the cylinder they are @ TDC.

Might be a waste of time, the steel shim gaskets might be better option, but check first anyways.
Only wimps wear Bowties !

Generally you cannot mill the heads enough to get to 10:1 unless you are in the mid to high 9s now
