general lee builders - smith bros vs scott lea - anyone else?

oddly enough I happen to have alot of experience with painting rusoleum onto sheet metal with nice results! I repainted 2 of our CNC milling machines using said paint and a 1 inch dia foam roller. The trick is to put enough on so the roller does more squeegeing than rolling but not so much coverage that the paint begins to sag. The warmer the weather the better and stay out of direct sunlight if you can. It self levels to a fantastic degree over a small amount of time before curring. I used a mix of white and almond to approxamate Fanuc off white and the machine looks like new!

Scotlea is actually totally redoing the original General Lee that the Smith Bros built a few years ago - fixed the cracked bondo, rewired it, cleaned up the interior so the colors matched, polished all the trim, fixed the worn suspension, etc.  Check it out at www.scotleaidolrods.com

Scotlea also has an AC system that bolts up in the original location and uses the original controls, along with the Vintage Air system that allows the firewall to be totally smoothed and look much cleaner.  Which one depends on what the owner wants to do.

After looking at alot of the different details it appears to me that Scottleaidolrods goes a bit farther in almost every phase of the restoration operation... full media blasting, por-15 and sealer on all white metal after blasting, multi stage paint, functional roll bars, high attention to detail, and polishing each and every little bright work piece on the car. I hit the high notes there but those are just a couple of the things that stand out in my mind. Both of these builders are great to talk to, and I don't think I would go wrong whith either builder, but I have a gut feeling at this point, so I'll just wait for the quotes to come back and see how it lands.

Hey Roscoe!  I looked intently at e-bay but most of the available cars just are not up to the standards I want. I did find one nice car just after I sent out the big check to Patrick, but even that car had a crumpled front valance and black interior with no AC! but at 28k it was pretty good. I think it went back on e-bay recently, I was told the buyer backed out. I wonder what that means? I think I'm getting a deal for what I am paying Patrick! I'll have a show car just the way I like it when he gets done. Here is a pic of the car he pulled out of the mud for me...

i think the Smith brother's car are nice but there NOT show pieces. There cars look like they have been rattle can interior and lots of orange paint. i would suggest doing  a general lee yourself. and make it your personal hobby. I think there are only a hand full of General's actually done nice. all he other ones are painted and stickered up. put some love in your dream..... it can only get better!!
