I know a lot of us get recall notices for vehicles and I would bet most of you would probably take the car/truck in to be fixed.  Hell, it's free anyway... but whether you do or don't, I wonder if anyone else says to themselves, like I have:  "yeah, right, that would never happen"

bla bla bla could so and so, resulting in (insert horrible accident)  I usually don't believe that would happen.   My best friend and my brother both have similar dodge trucks.  my buddy has a 96 and my brother has a 98.  Both very similar trucks, white, 1500 series, 5.9 mag motor, crew cab, 4x4.  and both happen to be white.  there is a recall on the secondary hood latch for trucks purchased in, or currently registered in the "salt belt" states.  seems some spring can get rusted and bind in the "open" position.  anyway, both of them had the hood fly up while driving basically destroying the hood.  My friend had it happen a couple of years ago and chrysler took the truck and fixed it for free.  My brother had it happen a couple of weeks ago.  He has been looking around in junkyards for hoods and hinges until I told him about the recall.

Just goes to show that it really can happen....twice!!

Fyi, I found a site with recall information http://www.autobytel.com/content/own/service/index.cfm/action/RecallsView/seriesid/11957 on my bro's truck and it's scary. on just this truck there were problems with rotors (weakness that could result in fracture of the hub area) body bolts not being the correct hardness, air bags that can deploy prematurely, abs recall, and an exhaust shield screw that's too close to the fuel line possibley causing a leak.

picture this.  you are driving down the road and the hood flys up.  you start to slow and apply the brakes, which lock up due to the bad abs module, causing the time bomb rotors to seperae at the hub sending you out of control towards the trees, you just about have it contained and the airbags go off in your face at 20 mph and you smash into a tree.  The ruptured fuel line catches fire on the hot exhaust shield, but you survive... how?  well you were nowhere near the tank when it exploded, and niether was the rest of the cab, which seperated from the frame on impact due to improper bolt hardening. oh, and if you had a diesel, the throttle linkage may stick too.  you know...for the kids...

I love america!!

My aunt got a recall notice 2 months ago for a 1994 Ford pickup they purchased second hand a year ago from the Ford Dealership. Seems this truck has been known to have a faulty wiring somewhere like the turn signals which can then burst into flames! They owned the truck for a YEAR and the damn thing is 12 YEARS old and they are just being issued a notice now for faulty wiring?  ::)

Needless to say the turn signals were acting up on the truck anyways for months and when they took the truck in to be repaired for free thanks to the recall notice, it was found that the wiring was melting!
