Does anyone make a quiet electric fuel pump?

Are all electric fuel pumps noisy? I am using a Holley Red pump right now and that thing is obnoxiously loud. Especially in the back seat. It's mounted under the trunk floor on the passenger side. I don't know if it is just getting old now or what.

I run the Mallory pump I think it is number 4140 rubber mounted and I can barely hear it run.

Looking at Summit's website they have a Mallory 4142 which is a 140 GPH pump with a regulator and bracket kit for $246. The 4142 pump will put out 120 GPH at 6 PSI. That should be enough for a 440 don't you think?

I dint like the noise of the Holley for one, I have had occasion where the engine sputters between first and second gear at high RPM. As soon as it grabs second the engine revs right up again. I put a fuel pressure gage on it back then and found the fuel pressure around 2 PSI. I did stretch out the spring in the Holley pump since that occurred and got the fuel pressure up from around 2 PSI to a real sloppy 6 PSI. By sloppy I mean the pressure varies from around 4 PSI to a little over 6 PSI and you can hear the pump oscillate with the change in pressure.

You think it's time for a new pump?

My 79 Blazer has had an electric pump rigged into it since I owned it.  That thing is obnoxiously loud.  I cant hear it when the truck is running but I have to turn the key on and wait for it to pump the fuel for a few seconds before I can actually start the truck.  I plan to switch it back to a mechanical pump eventually...

Hows this sound. I just got off the phone with the local speed shop and he is recomending going back to a mechanical pump since my Charger is a cruiser and not really a race car. He suggests using a Carter Super Strip Pump. He asked if the rod was still there? I don't know. There is a block off plate covering the hole right now. Can I take the plate off and see the rod?

You should be able to see the rod, if it is still in there, after you take off your block off plate, but most of the time people take them out when they put on the block off plate. If you need a new rod,  NAPA used to be able to get them if you don't have one laying around and if not you should be able to get one through 440 Source.com.

Paul, there is a core plug just below the block off plate that the rod slids into....if you remove the plug the rod will slide out assuming it's still in there. MP carries the fuel pump rods. The carter (6-8 psi) 120gph "street" mechanical pump is what you want. The strip pump will require a regulator as it outputs 12-14 psi which ia way too much.

Thanks guys. I got the Carter street mechanical pump like Ron suggested. Nice steady pressure around 7 PSI. Finding a place for the fuel filter was a bit of a challenge but it's done. I have a noisy Holley red pump if anyone wants it. Pay the shipping.

Cool....glad it worked out for ya Paul. The "street" pump will feed 550hp..... no problemo.
