Year of a H440 and J440

My brother picked up 2 chargers this week. They both have 440's in them. On the pad in the front of the intake one motor says H440 and the other one says J440. Does this tell the year?

J= 1973

Ok so when did they switch from steel crank to cast crank.

ditto the 73 440 in my car from a 73 imperial has a steel crank and the engine has never been apart other than an oil pan and intake

The cast 440 crank was introduced in '73, the Hi-Po still got forged but standard performance could be either cast or forged at random.
