:P I'm intrested in a 72 Charger that's said to be a Ralley. How can I tell? Is there a fender tag code or a VIN number that indicates a Rallye? Thanks folks. Tony

If it's a STL built car (G plant code) you should find A57 on the tag. If it's a Lynch Road built car, (A plant code) you'll have to determine a Rallye car by the broadcast sheet or items on the car. What else do you know about the car? Engine? Options?
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

tony, as 69coronet said most important is the vin tag. visually, it should have a powerbulge hood, and the doors should have 4 horozontal "louvers" in them and the tailights should differ to other 72 models they look like 71 rt/71 charger 500 tailights however all these items could be put on any 72 charger so be sure to check that fender tag good luck

Thanks guys. It is a Lynch Road car and the seller said I'd have to go by how it was optioned. I just couldn't imagine there wasn't a fender tag code. It does have the bulge hood, scaloped doors, tail light treatment, etc. It's just that those things could be added to an SE. The fender tag calls for E68 which was the 400. It's NOM with a 71 383 from a SW. It has a 120 speedo, I thought that was odd?? I guess that too could have been changed. No build sheet! That makes it harder. It's in OE paint and has little rust. I guess I need to decide if I want to clean out the garage. Thanks for the help,
Tony

tony, a easy way to see if it is a 72 se is to look at the rear quarter window on the se it doesnt "angle back" like all other 72 (and 71) charger's do. The se has it's own unique roofline best of luck

Be carefull with no tag, I got into problems with my Challenger from that,  Still can only guess how the car actually came from the factory and a 72 rallye will be worth much more than just a 72 Charger or SE.

There is a fender tag which I'm supposed to get a pic of, but no build sheet. The VIN reads WH23P2A, I thought that the "A" should have been a number, like 1 if it's Lynch Road. It does have the slanted 1/4 window that somebody mentioned.

If is  SE would be specified on VIN like WP29, and would look like this and would have hideaways beams, and regular tail lights with extra chromed trim on them

So being WH23 definitelly you have a hardtop, and looks rallye packaged with louvered doors, bulged hood, Louvered tail lights painted black.

the 2 designates the year (72), and the A is simply the plant where the car was built.. A does not correspond to 1. each place has a letter code. hamtramck michigan-B    st louis missouri G    los angeles E and so on
let us know what the fender tag ends up showing

There was a similiar thread last month that you might find informative. Bottom line is that on a Lynch Rd car, you wold need a build sheet or a window sticker to "prove" that it is a real Rallye and not a clone. Just having the Rallye items doesnt really prove much. I`ve got 2 cars with the items that are simply clones. Not being a provable Rallye car would detract from the value  in my opinion.

I agree and that's why I'm being so cautious.

Thanks Twilt, it did help. It's so hard to decide if you're seriously interested WO looking in person and it's hard to make a 4hr drive if you're not sure if you're intrested. From what I can gather, it's the real deal. It had a E68 engine code-400/4bbl/hp but now has a 71 383 from a SW. It has the seats from a 71, that kinda scares me some. I appreciate all the help fellows. Tony

If you pass on it, can you give me the info, I might be interested in buying it. Thanks
