Any idea where this wire goes?

My '68 Charger has a single brown wire with a white tracer that is dangling above the backside of the ignition switch.   It appears to be an 18 ga. wire, but I didn't find it on the wiring diagram.  Anybody know where it's suppose to attach?

Mrfixit

This is just a guess, but maybe windshield wiper or washer switch related.

Ghoste

I see a brown with tracer on the diagram going to the wiper switch.  Is it anything to do with two and three speed wipers?

histoy

My car has 2 speed wipers, so maybe it would hook to 3 speed wipers.   I just went out and checked and all the wires are hooked to my wiper switch and washer switch, but thanks for the input.

dont know on earliers, but 3rd gens, 3 and 2 speeds uses same wiring, is just enough change switch and motor of course

ONLY BROWN WIRE  with a tracer is for the wiper switch. the lead goes onto another separate terminal on the switch- look to see if one dosen't have anything on it!!!

John,
There are 7 wires going to the back of my wiper switch, and no extra connections.  One of the 7 is a brown wire with a white tracer, and it is a heavier gauge wire than the single brown with white tracer that's not connected to anything.

Ghoste

You're just going to have to find where it attaches at the other end.  ;D

wierd- only show that brown wire with a tracer for the wipers.

double check- there are lots of blacks and grays with a tracer.

also- does this wire go into the main harness or is it just taped to it?????

71 Deputy... this wire comes out of the center of the wiring harness that goes to the wiper switch plus the 2 wires going to the ammeter.  I got a brighter light and the brown and violet colors look so close that the wire may be a violet with white tracer, but I still think it's brown.     There is a note on the wiring diagram that says "resistance cable V7-24BR*  not required for 2 speed".  It appears to be a small jumper wire on the diagram... not one coming from the harness.  However, it is a small wire in the harness, and I have 2 speed wipers, so maybe that's the answer.   My thanks to all those who have responded.

VERY POSSIABLE IT IS THAT RESISTANCE WIRE- TRY MOVING IT- IT WILL MOVE DIFFERENTLY- KINDA LIKE IT HAS A SPRING IN IT.

sorry about caps!!!!

That's correct.  It is springy.  When I tried to bend it, it straightened out again.  Mystery solved.  Thanks for your help....Brian

Been dealing with the same question on my 70 Charger with the 2 brown wires and a brown wire with a tracer.  Also saw the same note in the diagrams about that jumper wire, mine is a 3 speed.  I did not have the luxury of being able to take this car apart myself, it was in a zillion boxes when I bought it.  On the diagram that jumper wire for the 3 speed wiper looks like it comes out of the molded plug in connector.  Does it?  if so, mine is missing.

The wire on my car is coming from the wiper wiring harness under the dash.   It sticks out about 8" and has a black female connection attached to the end.   I figured that it must push on to a spade terminal on the wiper switch of a 3 speed wiper, however my car has just 2 speed wipers.

History,
I seem to have the same wire, but I was told that it was my lead from the RPM guage to the fuse panel.  So, if you found the reason behind it's purpose, please explain, I didn't understand the springy thing?
Thanks

I have the instrument cluster out of my 68 to replace the fuel gauge.

I looked at the brown wires because I remembered one "loose" one like you have.
I have a 2 speed wiper motor.

There are two plain brown wires for the washer button
There is one plain brown wire that connects to the wiper switch in addition to the 5 hole connector
The loose wire is brown with a stripe.

I wondered if it was for the "blank" switch opening under the fuel gauge which I thought was for a rear defroster? I guess there would be two wires for such a switch though.

My 2 cents

The factory service manual shows 3 wires to the rear defogger switch.... light green, black ,and white.

i don't know if i am reading this correctly  , but this might be of help      i had a spare brown wire  :yesnod:   on my original dash harness - if i  remember correctly it had a white tracer . also it was on the new harness from M&H ( yearone )  not used on a 2 speed wiper car ,  tape up the  connection just to be sure &   bind  / tape  it to the harness out of harms way .

the extra brown wire with the white tracer wire beside the wiper switch is for the 3 speed wiper motor- it is a resistance wire- feels " springy " when you bend it. this wire is like the resistor on the 2 speed motor. if you have a 2 speed- just tape it out of the way.
With the three speed the extra wire terminal is connected to the spare lug on the wiper switch.
